This week our Youth Director, Rotarian Mike Weber shares some of his very many memories:
Mike notes that many Rotarians will will have their own stories to tell about a range of projects and specifically mentions the Kids Fun Run with K163 and says Tia Worrell will have real good stories about Bark-in-the-Park.
I could do a chapter & verse on our club starting Young Carers by John Gordon and myself (assistant as Youth Director at the time) and how it expanded into a Nationally recognised organisation today. We had whole day horse races at Mornington Racecourse and it was known and named as the Rotary Young Carers Day with the same naming rights for the main race of the day. This was done for 3 years and it was a fabulous event that really put RCME and Young Carers on the map. In those days the local rag (newspaper), The Leader, was still in full swing and many articles were written about our club and Rotary in general.
We also had quite a few “INTERNATIONAL” bring & eat nights at Morning Star where everyone brought a dish that depicted a different country, or only one country, and we used to dress up in that countries national costume and bring food from that country. I have fond memories of Rick Berg dressing up as a flamboyant Indian on one occasion and Brynton Fennel coming in the full regalia of an Arabian price with the robes and even wore a false beard and coloured his face and hands to truly be in character. These are the things that made our club unique to us as members before we started having squabbles.
Alex Anderson went off to PNG for a few weeks to build a school and other sorely needed hands-on facilities with his own funding. Remarkable effort.
PP Alan Thompson had as his presidential year to build the rotunda in Rotary Park, which today proudly stands as a symbol of community unity in our village and is frequently used by the locals and visitors.
