Hi everybody

A brief this message this week.

Thanks to Past President Ross for stepping in when I was unable to attend this week's meeting.

Thanks also to Rotarian Frank Flowers who stepped in when our scheduled Three Minute Speaker Suzie Adam was unable to be present.

I am looking forward to catching up with everyone at next week's Barefoot Bowls evening. Please bring your friends.

Until next time
Yours in Rotary
Sue

District Governor Mark Humphries and Past President Linda Humphries

Greetings to all members of the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza and other readers of this Bulletin.

This week I would like to draw your attention to the fact that Australian Rotary Health was established in 1981 and this year celebrates its 40th Birthday.

Celebrate 40 Years With ARH

Pictured here are the first three Chairmen of Australian Rotary Health - PDG Colin Dodds, PDG Geoffrey Betts AM MBE, and PRIP Royce Abbey AO DCM.

This year marks 40 years since Australian Rotary Health first began as a Rotary project to support health research.

Celebrate with us by donating to our birthday fundraiser today or register for our 40th Birthday and Hat Day Webinar on World Mental Health Day (Sunday October 10).

A recent email from ARH provides details as to how make these donations in celebration of Rotary's continuing great work.

Until next time
Warm regards
Mark & Linda

CLUB NEWS
RCME 50th Anniversary

Secretary Pauline reminds everyone to save the date for our 50th Anniversary - Tuesday May 25th, 2021

More details will follow shortly.

Club Guest Speaker

Our Guest Speaker this week was Elspeth Black from the Lord Smith Animal Hospital together with her beautiful dog Bertie - an Old English Sheepdog. Elspeth spoke about the outstanding work of Lord Smith and told a number of stories about dogs caring for people in need, especially those suffering from medical conditions (PET THERAPY). In addition to the work of Bertie, Elspeth also spoke about the work of Vlad, a gorgeous Black Russian Terrier and Doris, a Miniature Schnauzer.

Farmers Market

We have a Farmer's Market on Sunday 25 April (ANZAC DAY).

Kindly let Rotarian George-Ann of your availability so that a roster can be prepared asap.

ANZAC DAY

On Anzac Day a service will be held at the Mt Eliza Community Centre early in the afternoon (after the closure of the Farmers' Market)

Past President Ross advises that a small number of volunteers are required to set up for the commemorative service.

Please let Ross know of your availability.

Guests this week

Apart from our guest speaker Elspeth we also enjoyed having Leanne Trembath and Justin Mason attend this week's meeting. The Editor understands that Leanne & Justion will shortly become members which is great news.

It was also a delight to have former Club Member John Paterson visit us this week. It is very pleasing to report that John expects to be back from Tasmania later this year and that he will be rejoining our Club.

Secretary Pauline

The Editor speaks on behalf of everyone when he says that our beloved Secretary Pauline McFarlane is not grumpy.

However, Pauline was understandably a little upset at Tuesday's meeting because she had to spend a considerable amount of time on Tuesday confirming who was and was not attending our dinner meeting. Pauline needs to know the numbers by lunchtime on Tuesdays so that she is able to notify Toorak Collge in order that everyone in attendance can receive a meal.

Please show Pauline and your fellow members your respect by notifying Pauline IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BE IN ATTENDANCE.

Remember the element of the Four Way Test - IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED?

IT IS NOT FAIR IF YOU FAIL TO ADVISE OF NON-ATTENDANCE. IT IS NOT FAIR TO PAULINE, TO TOORAK COLLEGE NOR TO YOUR FELLOW MEMBERS IF THE CLUB HAS TO PAY FOR A MEAL BECAUSE YOU DON'T TURN UP.

Please let Pauline know as early as possible when you know that you are unable to attend and certainly no later than 12 noon on the day of the meeting.

LAUGHTER THE BEST MEDICINE
Two successful businessmen, Don and Harry, had known each other and been friends all their lives, having met in primary school.

While they got on well together they were great rivals and whenever one did something the other had to outdo him.

When Harry bought a Mercedes coupe, Don announced that he had just purchased a 7 Series BMW.

When Don bought a home for two million dollars, Harry responded by buying one for 2.5 million.

Harry went on a trip to Europe and when he came home he couldn't wait to tell Don that he had been able to secure a trip to Buckingham Palace where he had been introduced to the Queen.

Don was eaten with jealousy and determined to outdo Harry and within a few days he had embarked on a trip to Europe.

When he returned the two friends met up for dinner.

"How did your trip go?" Harry asked do. "Was it as good as my trip?"

"I don't really know", Don responded.

He went on, "My first stop was Rome and when I arrived the Pope came to the airport to meet me. He invited me to the Vatican and I spent the whole three weeks staying with him and looking at all of the fine works of art and treasures of the Holy See."

Harry was greatly impressed. "The Pope?" he asked breathlessly, "tell me, what is the Pope really like?"

"Well", Don replied, "He is a fine fellow and I really liked him. But, Mrs Pope, I didn't like her at all!"

Q. How do you make a successful small business?

A. Put an idiot in charge of a large one.

A little recorded note in history occurred in the late 1990s when former President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev held a news conference in London.

A reporter from one the UK's tabloid press asked him, "Mr Gorbachev, what effect on history do you think it would have been if, in 1963, President Krushchev had been assassinated instead of President Kennedy?"

Gorbacheb paused for a moment, thought and replied, "Well, I think that Mr Onassis would not have married Mrs Krushchev."

An economist is a person who marries Elle Macpherson for her money!

REMEMBER WHEN - FIFTY YEARS OF THE RC MT ELIZA
Last week Alan Gamble, an esteemed Honorary Member of our Club, passed away.

At our meeting on Tuesday 13 April, International Director Maurie Selth spoke about Alan and his wonderful contribution to Rotary.

As our historian, John Gilbert, has said, "sadly, many of our (newer) members never had the opportunity to meet Alan who served for 51 years as an active member of five different clubs".

Thanks to John for providing the following information about Alan, who was born on 17 September 1933 and passed away aged 87 on 6 April 2021.

Alan joined the Rotary Club of Lakes Entrance on 30 June 1965 and served as a member there for six years including a year as President.

Following a move to Traralagon he joined the Rotary Club there, being a member for the next five years where he held the position of Club Director. After this Alan shifted to Sale where he was a member for just under six years and again he served as Club President.

Alan and his wife Nita moved to Mt Eliza in 1982 and Alan transferred to the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza from 19 May 1982 through until 31 December 2003. During over 21 years of Club membership Alan was Secretary for two years (when Maurie Selth & Alex Anderson were Presidents), Club President and Assistant District Governor.

At the start of 2004, Alan became a member of the Frankston-Long Island Club for seven years and then re-joined Mt Eliza on 23 November 2010.

Alan remained as an active member of our Club through until the end of the 2015/16 Rotary Year and at that time members were delighted to see him receive Honorary membership.

An outstanding Rotarian, Alan was recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza in 1993. The Frankston-Long Island Club recognised him with a PHF Sapphire in 2010.

Many of our longer serving members have great memories of Alan and we pass on our condolences to his wife Nita and members of his family.
