The Spring weather is definitely upon us and the days are getting longer and brighter. Hopefully this will also help counter the virus. We had another good zoom meeting this week with and Michael was an excellent speaker. He really opened my eyes to the topic of design and his company’s impact on an eclectic range of products. I would not have thought that a design company would go from paper to bricks as well as the typical interior design. Really fascinating and so pleasing that they utilise the Australian nature and culture in their design process.

We have slipped back into a successful zoom model but saying that we hope to improve the efficiency of the meetings by altering a couple of things. Secretary Pauline will oversee any announcements. If you need to announce something to the club please email her the topic and context she will introduce you after her announcements. Directors will not be reporting as such. We also would like everybody to use the “Chat” facility more if you need to give the club members a message, reminder or call for volunteers. So keep an eye on the “Chat” icon throughout the meeting Unfortunately, John Horscroft needed to spend more time in hospital and is still very uncomfortable with his knee and struggling to sleep but hopefully he is now on the mend after the slow start to his rehab, and that soon we will spend some zoom time with him.

A reminder to all club members that we decided to bring back the monthly donation to the “heads-and tails” and “fines” collection during lockdown. A figure of up to $20 per month was suggested but that is entirely up to you. Chris would prefer that you deposit for September & October in one transaction.  Banking details are included in the Bulletin.

Justin would like me to tell everyone that his beach clean up program will start on Saturday mornings after we are allowed to go out and about for those types of activities. I suspect in about a month’s time.

Stay safe and healthy everybody and see you next Tuesday.

Cheers, Neil

Guest Speaker, Michael Malignaggi, Joint MD., Nexus Designs

Nexus Designs is a Melbourne based Design Consultancy, which was founded in 1967 by Janne Faulkner. She worked with David Yencken (Merchant Builders) in designing homes that were specifically for Australian conditions, in colour, shade, light capture and materials. Janne passed away in 2018, but her design philosophy lives on in Nexus Designs.

Nexus Design is a multi-disciplinary graphic design and communications consultancy, covering Interior, Graphic and Product Design. Michael gave an outline of 6 projects which illustrate the skills and range of projects undertaken by Nexus. The first was the Tribeca loft in New York. Using colours that represent Australia, including the blue from the Blue Mountains, Nexus created an outstanding interior layout for their Australian client. This office was updated last year, with much of the original furniture reused, showing the sustainable philosophy of Nexus.

The second was the Victorian Auditor General’s office in 2016. There was a new Auditor General, who insisted that the design was based on showing the transparency of the office. The design drew inspiration from the Victorian regios, Mt Buffalo, The Grampians, Yarra Valley, the Murray sunset, Wilsons Prom., and Otway Forest. The Auditor General’s office was a fully glazed box.  Toorak College Chapel. The interior was designed to convey the spirit of the school, creating a serene and beautiful space for reflection and for special occasions. The was a Graphic Design project for Rosa’s Table. An Identity Design was created, covering the Melbourne cooking classes and the Food Tours to Sicily. There was a surface design project for Omni Décor Glass. Nexus designed patterns, glass screens, glass wall and a suite of 6 patterns.

The sixth project was for PGH Bricks, where Nexus looked at a style campaign, including product development, a global trend review, the trend forward and a product audit related to colour. A video was then shown, indicating the range of PGH Bricks designs. The design team try to source items from Australia, but much of the furniture comes from Italy who lead the way in modern design. Michael concluded by answering a number of questions.
Bay Trail Plan
Rotary Club of Mt Eliza Centenary Project: Bay Trail Outline

Stage 1  Environmental Work on proposed trail (2021 – 2022)
This is to be mainly on the Moorooduc station  to Wooralla Drive section. Some work maybe done on the Wooralla Drive to Tanti section or the Station along the Eastlink Trail towards Baxter.
  • Weed removal
  • Conservation of indigenous flora
  • Soil preparation for seedlings etc
  • Purchasing indigenous plant stock
  • Planting
  • Caring for planted stock
  • Signage
This work will be done with consultation with and overseen by the Friends of the Mornington Railway Society. They will suggest the tasks we would do.

Stage 2 Moorooduc Station  (2022- 2024)
The Mornington Railway Preservation Society are replacing their Moorooduc station with the old Cheltenham Station. The footprint of the building must be determined before facilities for the Bike Trail can be sited or even planned. They plan to have that done early in 2022. They will then be able to “point us in the right direction” as to want we can do infrastructure wise. The Club plans to be involved in construction of shelters, bike storage and other infrastructure for Bay Trail users.

Stage 3: Trail Construction (2023 - ?)

Stage 4 Environmental/Conservation/Trail work at the Moorooduc Station area. (2023 -?)
