Hi everybody

Until next time
Yours in Rotary
Sue

District Governor Mark Humphries and Past President Linda Humphries

Greetings to all members of the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza and other readers of this Bulletin.

Warm congratulations to the members of the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza as we celebrate our 50th anniversary.

A wonderful contribution to Rotary and what is now District 9820 has been made over the long period of time since 1971 by our Club and members, past and present.

Throughout its existence our Club has undertaken numerous fund-raising activities and provided great community support, locally, nationally and internationally.

As mentioned at our District Conference earlier this month members at Mt Eliza have contributed in excess of $100,000 ti the Rotary Foundation; a magnificent effort.

It is with both pleasure and anticipation that Linda and I look forward to Mt Eliza embarking upon it's next 50 year journey.

Until next time
Warm regards
Mark & Linda

Stories
News from RC Muehldorf, Germany
Following our very successful international Zoom meeting earlier this year our Treasurer Chris Angerer continues to liaise with the RC Muehldorf in Germany.

Chris regularly receives their Bulletins (in German and in PDF format, which is very difficult to copy). If you would like a copy please see Chris.

The latest Bulletin from RC Muehldorf, Germany has a number of interesting points which Chris has summarised for our members:
  • The 8 seat rowing boat for their competitions arrived and can be assembled in 10  minutes, with rising temperatures training becomes more pleasant and everyone is looking forward to the races in September. Due to distancing laws current, they can at the moment only practice with 4 or 5 and free seats.
  • They are looking at participating at a regional tree planting day, as sponsors covering overhead and marketing costs. The project is directed to raise awareness of Water retention, Bee meadows, species variety and forestry etc., It will be a very good project involving media presence of the Rotary club. In November they will participate in a hands on planting project.
  • Their Friend Uli Kain now works Switzerland and gave a presentation about his new home called ‘Einsiedel’, namely ‘Hermitage’. He presented pictures and stories among them Language characteristics, sub terrain  Hospital of the Swiss Army, Big Mac Index ( see attachment, comparing price of BigMac in Switzerland to Germany, Australia ), corona restrictions etc.

REMEMBER WHEN - PRESENTATION OF CHARTER RC MT ELIZA
On Tuesday 15 June 1971 at the Prince Mark Hotel, Princes Highway, Dandenong a Dinner was held to present the Charter to the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza.

The Program for the evening was as follows:

Call to Order & Welcome - Chairman, President Don Gordon, Rotary Club of Mornington (Sponsoring Club)

Invocation - Rotarian Rev Ray Smith

Loyal Toast - PDG Keith Norman

Introduction of Distinguished Visitors - President Norm Arthur, RC Frankston

Report by Governor's Special Representative - Rotarian Lou Guthridge for PP John Turner, RC Mornington

Introduction of Charter President - District Governor, John Emerton

Address & Presentation of Charter - DG John Emerton

Presentation of Gifts - Chairman Don Gordon

From the program the evening we see:

BRIDGE THE GAPS

It was from the facile brain and lonely heart of Paul Harris that the idea came ... the idea of Rotary ... which stimulated the imagination of the three men gathered around him in that small office in Chicago in 1905.  This idea challenged these men to dream a dream, even then, but they dared not dream that this idea would bridge the world - to Melbourne in 1921, and then on to Dandenong in 1935. It was the Rotarians of Dandenong who in 1947 bridged the gap to Mornington.

Now, just as others have shared Rotary with us, we share it with the Rotarians of Mount Eliza.

The Charter Members of the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza were:

Graham Reid - Fifty Years of Service
At our 50 Year Celebration Dinner President sue Voss made a special presentation of Rotarian Graham Reid, a foundation member of our Club with fifty years of continuous service.

Earlier in this Rotary Year Graham provided the Bulletin with five pages of his many memories of the Club. These were printed in August 2020 editions of the Bulletin.

The first provisional meeting was held on Tuesday 9 March 1971 with the Club's Charter presentation being held on 15 June 1971.

The then District 980 Governor John Emerton installed Wal Cubbin as the Charter president with Dr Bill Parsons as the Charter Secretary.

Graham views Wal as the Father of the Club who made Fellowship the cement or glue that held the Club together.

Graham himself was installed as the third President of the Club in the 1973-74 Rotary Year.

In responding to his presentation Graham spoke as follows:

Hi President Sue & Members All.

I sincerely appreciate Our Club's recognition of my 50 years Membership.

Thank You for My Memorable Rotary Clock. Inscribed," 50 Years Rotary Service. " It feels like I am Superannuated /Old Age. The clock also seems symbolic as per " Salvatory Dali's MELTING CLOCK "

As a Charter Member I would like to share my REMINISCENCES of 50 Rotary Years

50 years ago our stating Mark or starting point was at Dandenong when, at the same time as the RC Seaford, our Charters were conferred at the Prince Mark Hotel.

Over the last half century there have been countless past & present members.

We have made our Mark on a LOCAL STATE, AUSTRALIAN & WORLD level.

Mount Eliza Rotary Club has certainly left its MARK & will be remembered in history, for the successful and important things achieved.

It should be noted our Present CHARTER, due to fire is not the ORIGINAL, which didn't survive the fire.  An exception that did survive was my SMOKEY Badge.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognise two members who made a huge MARK on the Success of Our Club.

Our first President & Father of Our Club WAL CUBBIN &  Secretary Dr BILL PARSONS.

As I have said in the past, our start was like the Immaculate Conception, especially the work & detail in dealing with Rotary International USA.

I think Mount Eliza has well accomplished the MARK set by WAL & Bill. We have substantially achieved our number one policy, FELLOWSHIP.

We are currently considering our future direction and the success of our CLUB VISIONING will guide us towards our next 50 years.

Fifty Year Celebration Dinner
In spite of last minute threats from an outbreak of COVID-19, it was wonderful for the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza to celebrate our 50th Anniversary at the Ranelagh Club on Tuesday 25 May.

Approximately 100 Rotarians, Friends, Family and others gathered to celebrate the passing of 50 years since the charter of our Club in May 1971. It was particularly pleasing that Graham Reid, a Charter Member of the Club fifty years ago with history of continuous membership was in attendance at the celebration. President Sue Voss presented Graham with a present recognising his magnificent service to our Club (see story elsewhere in this Bulletin).

Everyone in attendance is a part of the extended family of the Rotary club of Mt Eliza. It was particularly pleasing to welcome Jan Berg, Sue Constantine, Robyn Stretch and Jane Vandeth widows of four dedicated members of our Club who have passed away in recent times (Ric Berg, David Constantine, Roger Stretch and Sander Vandeth).

Joining us to celebrate the anniversary it was wonderful to see Paul & Pat Harvey and Guenter & Innes Steinbrecher in attendance. Rotarians Paul and Guenter are greatly missed at our Club.

Among the many distinguished guests on the evening we had our current District Governor, and Club Member, Mark Humphries, PDG James Webb (another foundation member of our Club), David Morris MP, District Governor elect Bill Degnan, PDG Janet McCahon, PDG Don Ripper, Assistant Governor Peter Rawlings, Ross Kilborn, President of the Rotary Club of Mornington and Peter Harris, President of the Rotary Club of Seaford/ Carrum Downs.

In 1971 the RC Mornington sponsored the establishment of the Mt Eliza and Seaford Rotary Clubs. There were a number of members from the RC Seaford/ Carrum Downs in attendance with President Peter Harris. Mornington President Ross Kilborn recapped the lead up to the establishment of our Club in 1970 culminating in our Charter in May 1971.

Apologies and best wishes were received from Past District Governor Merv Williams, Honorary Member Jim Simpson (who joined our Club in 1973 and Friend of the Club, Past Rotarian Tim Acton.

Best wishes were received from Honorary Rotarian Len Christie on behalf of the Probis Club of Mt Eliza. It is hoped to include the Probis message in next week's Bulletin.

In an inspirational speech President Sue traced the history of the Club including a large number of our many achievements over the last fifty years.

President Sue also had the pleasure of inducting five new members - inaugural Satellite Club Members Steve Holland, Gill Holden, Jacqueline Sherlock and Rebecca Orchard together with the Club's latest member James (Jim) Voss.

District Governor Mark Humphries reflected upon the Club's many successes and outlined the successes of Rotary as this year we celebrate 100 years of the organisation in Australia. Mark noted that Rotarians from our Club have contributed approximately $150,000 to the Rotary Foundation.

Toward's the end of the formal proceedings a photograph was taken of all current members of the Club.

Thank you and warm congratulations to the organising Committee - Secretary Pauline McFarlane, Bernie Edwards, Maurie Sleth and Ross Schweitzer for organising a highly successful evening.

Charter Members of the RC Mt Eliza James Webb & Graham Reid

In next week's Bulletin PP Ross Schweitzer will share some of the 88 photos that he took at the celebration dinner.

Australian Rotary Golf Tour
Over 100 Rotarians and their partners experienced a fantastic AGFR golf tour at Maroochy River golf course on the glorious Sunshine Coast this year after missing out on 13th Beach last year due to COVID.

Judy Coultas and Suzie Adam represented Mt Eliza Rotary and true to form Judy played fantastic rounds in very windy conditions and brought home the Division 3 trophy and helped Victoria to a very closely contested State win just pipping Queensland at the post on the last day. Suzie played her usual steady (Ed) golf to bring the tail end of the field back to the clubhouse.

Next year is in Hobart and Suzie would recommend anyone interested in golf and Rotary to join us for a fantastic week of fun and fellowship with a bit of golf thrown in.
