President's Message - John Welsh

President’s report 3rd June, 2023

Vale John Paterson.

By now we will all know the sad news of John Paterson’s passing last Sunday. Libby and his children were with him at St John of God hospital in Ballarat.

John’s funeral will be held next Wednesday 7th June at 10.00am at St James the Less Anglican Church Mt Eliza.

John was inducted into Rotary in 2007. He served in a number of areas in Rotary including President in 2012-13. During Johns year he supported the Stephanie Alexander Garden at Mt Eliza primary, Riding for the disabled. He supported projects in New Guinea and East Timor. One of his passions was Interplast were he challenged the club to make the $45000 needed to send a team overseas, as well as young carers and lots of functions for the club. He received a Paul Harris award. John was a committed Rotary member, thoughtful and forward thinking. He was a good friend and support to many of us and will be greatly missed.

The market day on Sunday was cold windy and wet! We all turned up and are to be congratulated. It was a poor takings day but we must take the rough with the smooth.
The sale at Moondah continues, the third auction finished on Tuesday night. There may be another auction to finish up all that is left, this to be confirmed.

Our guest speaker on Tuesday was Alan Cane who was accompanied by his wife Susanna. His topic was the inequities between women and men in some Middle eastern countries. He has written a contemporary fiction book to highlight the problem. It is called “Behind the Burqa”. It was a very informative talk.

I look forward to seeing you next Tuesday.

Regards
John

Three Minute Speaker:  Alex Anderson - Stroke 1 Year Later

Alex reflected on his stroke now that he has reached the 1 year anniversary of its occurrence.
He made these comments:
  •  A stroke can affect any of your faculties
  •  You cannot appreciate how much it can knock you around
  • The speed you get treatment is critical to the final outcome and recovery
  •  Recovery is slow
Alex was lucky that he was home with Pat and the ambulance came in 4 minutes.
  • You get no warning
  • He listed these risk factors are:
  •  High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Various cardio vascular conditions

Finally, Alex gave this advice
  • Limit the alcohol – he has no alcohol now
  • Keep doing all the activities you can
  • You can recover

This Weeks Speaker
Guest Speaker: Alan Cane “Behind the Burqa”

Alan spoke about his book and the background it was based on. Alan is a UK born professional
engineer who spent most of his career in the Middle East and South East Asia. He emigrated to
Australia in 1984 and started to write books. Behind the Burqua is his 5 th book. The book is a
contemporary fiction novel based on the “medieval world of Islam” practised by some Middle East
countries. The book discusses the oppression of women and the attempts by young women to flee
to the west to escape this. Women are essentially the vassals of men and can do nothing without
their permission and must go out in public accompanied only by men of their family and dressed in
the burqa with a head covering. The countries have been practising this for over a thousand years
and is now ingrained into their culture. The story follows a young educated woman trained as a
medical intern and her attempt to flee to UK to escape from her oppressive and violent
father/family.
Alan wants the West to become more emotionally attached to the plight of women in these
countries and add our weight to the general outrage of this regime. He reminded us of the case of
the young woman who fled to Thailand from Saudi Arabia on the way to Australia on an Australian
visa. She was detained by Thailand under pressure of the Saudis and was only rescued when the
Canadians gave her refugee status and took her to Canada (Begs the question what were we doing?).
Alan is obviously passionately opposed to this regime and its treatment of women and wants the
world to know of this injustice. He told us that there are 17 million women in Saudi living with very
few civil rights. There is little or no work/careers for them – Saudi Arabia has the lowest employment
rate of women in the world- and all decisions concerning their lives are made for them by their
fathers and then their husbands once they are married off with little or no say in any matter. As you
can expect the questions for Alan were numerous as well as the sales of his book after the meeting.
Once again we had another excellent speaker at our Club.
