Hi everybody

Following on from last week's session on Club Visioning, in the next few months we will do further work as our Club maps out our future for the next five years.

In the meantime, however, I have been doing some reading on what makes a Rotary club successful.  One thing that quickly becomes clear in highly successful clubs is that Rotary this isn’t just a meeting; it’s a gathering of friends. Treating each other with respect, enjoying fellowship  and generally having a good time make our weekly Rotary gatherings something to anticipate and fully enjoy.

Last week Carolyn Such spoke about the need for our Club to use social media to engage, members, potential members and the community. A number of very successful clubs have very active social media accounts. For example many small clubs have 600 or 700 hundred or more Instragram followers and Facebook is effectively used for a variety of initiatives, especially fundraising campaigns. A good example is the Rotary Club of Yaletown in Canada who have used Facebook to launch a fundraising campaign called the Every Drop of Talent Challenge, which called on supporters to post a video of themselves performing their talent, then tag three friends to do the same or to make a donation.

Being an integral part of the community is something else that successful clubs have in common. While we do well with the Farmers' Market and a host of other community programs we can still do more to engage and interactive with people who live in Mt Eliza. Checking on our neighbours, encouraging participation in Rotary events and publicising our various projects can all provide opportunities to improve recognition of Rotary and all that we do.

Every member of our Club has something to offer and we should encourage each other to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to maximise their involvement in Rotary. In this context I encourage all of us to think how we can better support and engage our fellow members.

Until next time
Yours in Rotary
Sue

District Governor Mark Humphries and Past President Linda Humphries

Greetings to all members of the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza and other readers of this Bulletin.

I invite everyone to celebrate the 40th Birthday of Australian Rotary Health.

After a year of COVID-19 restrictions that cancelled many of our plans, we want to celebrate! 40 years ago, Australian Rotary Health (ARH) was established as a charitable fund by Rotarian PP Ian Scott and the Rotary Club of Mornington, Victoria, to research the mystery of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Since those early days, our work has continued to expand and has made an impact not only across the country, but also internationally. With the support of Rotary Clubs and Districts in Australia, we are so proud to be a part of creating better health for all Australians. Research and advancements in knowledge funded by ARH provide both preventative and curative solutions for a broad range of health conditions.

Since 2000, our research focus has been on mental health. In 2012, this focus narrowed to the Mental Health of Young Australians (Aged 0-25), and in 2013, projects focussing on the Prevention of Mental Illness were included. Programs such as Cool Kids and Mental Health First Aid are just a couple of examples of our funding leading to positive outcomes.

Lift the Lid on Mental Illness is our national campaign for mental health research and awareness, and every year on World Mental Health Day (October 10) we celebrate Hat Day to raise funds for vital research into mental health.

In just 40 years, we’ve achieved so much. We’re inviting you to help us mark this milestone year and invest in the future by supporting our work today.

Until next time
Warm regards
Mark & Linda

If you cannot see the humour in this, please read the whole article.
It proves that Swedish saying “We are like the Germans, only without their sense of humour”. My personal experience, acquired here and in Sweden, is that this is understated. I admit to being a host for a Swedish Exchange Student; he and his family are exceptions. As if to reinforce the perverse nature of the Swedes. I was told by a colleague not to speak any German there [largely because the Country pretended neutrality during WWII - it had to do with their iron ore supply]. So, one evening later I visit a restaurant in Stockholm. My NZ colleague said ‘well you will have to speak English here anyway’ ...... The menus arrived; one side Swedish, one side German.

So, to the anecdote:

......Oh yes, card came on Friday, thank you.
It was brought to the door by postess because she had a registered letter too.
Of course, my electronic doorbell didn’t work....
..... I may have told you that when my car was hit from behind 2 Years ago, the battery disconnected for safety (by an explosive link, ironically) and without power the car was locked in park and had to be dragged off the road by the tow truck after causing a peak hour traffic jam.
I found a video that shows how to manually engage neutral on the ZF 8 speed (used in several car brands). There is a screw on the left side of the transmission, you wind it in to push a lever. I think it’s under a shield. Not something you could do without jacking the car and having the right tool. Oh, and they don’t supply a jack with BMWs any more......

BTW: One other brother owns an X -5 so I must tell him. Not to mention Carl Voss. surprise

Herr Angerer reliably informs me that one may access the Porsche Diesel engine in both the Tiger and Panther Panzerwagens from either behind or below [there is ground clearance; also you are protected smiley].
