Despite the poor attendance at our last Zoom meeting the Board has decided to persist with Zoom through the winter months. The speaker was Sophie Nolan who is currently studying A Bachelor of Science Advanced Global Challenges at Monash University. It is the only course of its type in the country. Sophie is looking at the circumstances of people who have succumbed to sudden cardiac death. It is embarrassing to have a quality speaker like that speak to such a small group. Zoom allows us to schedule excellent speakers who may not be prepared to travel to Mount Eliza. If anyone needs help with Zoom there are lots of Club experts. It will be discussed at our next Club Assembly. Our next Zoom speaker is a lady who is a senior buyer for Coles. She has needed to get permission from her employer to speak to us. I will get a show of hands to see who will guarantee Zoom attendance before we proceed with this invitation. I will be very unhappy if people put their hand up but then donot appear on Zoom. We have a huge weekend coming up with a combination of the Farmers Market as well as Bunnings. Annette has put a lot of effort into building the rosters co-opting family and friends. We need to be very supportive. It will be a large financial return for the Club. We earn the money so we can return it to the community in various ways.
Maurie has had to titanium discs inserted between vertebrae in his back. These have been attached to two metal rods to stabilise/fuse that section. Prior to the operation Maurie received varying opinions on how successful from absolute failure and worse than what it was to vast improvement and back doing his normal things - Golf primarily! Maurie believed the cause of the injury was probably a combination of arthritis, vocation of dentistry which had him on his feet all day often bending over and his sporting life when younger. Maurie was an elite rower in crews winning Head's of River events and state championships. All of this put a lot of strain on his back. The prognosis for Maurie is looking good, however, there is a way to go for full recovery and a lot of exercising especially in the pool. Mauries' message: Look after your body.
As the new Chair of Australian Rotary Health District 9820, and Chair for our new District 9815 I have been actively engaging with past committee members to ensure continuity. Plans are underway for the establishment of District 9815, with discussions held on the new structure and community involvement. Our goal is to have representatives from each of the 7 Community Groups to promote mental health research, Lift the Lid activities, and support health services training. We aim to engage Rotary clubs through meetings and activities, both in person and via Zoom. Building a dedicated team of Rotarians to support ARH is a priority, with scheduled bi-monthly meetings planned for the upcoming Rotary year. Any one interested in knowing more abut ARH please contact me happy to have coffee and a chat.
