President’s Column – Bulletin – July 2025

May I start by thanking and acknowledging outgoing President Carolyn Such’s commitment over the last two years. Thanks to Carolyn’s leadership, our Club is in excellent shape with a strong membership, committed Rotarians, well established fund-raising programs and many worthwhile projects that give back to the community.

Good to see Neil Heron and Iain Spear at this week’s meeting safely back from their respective trips to South Africa and the UK. Also very pleasing to see Rowan Miller well on the improve.

Our speaker this week was Rebecca Orchard from the Satellite Club, accompanied by Jacqui Sherlock. Rebecca’s presentation provided those in attendance with a look at a broad range of Satellite Club initiatives. This provided great insight into the activities of our fellow Rotarians.

We have a Farmer’s Market this coming Sunday, 27 July. Thank you to everyone who is on the roster.

The new Board new Board meets this week and at next week’s Club Assembly a verbal update will be given. Welcome to Keith den Hartog, Vocational director and thanks to Suzie Adam for her Board contributions over the years.

Rotary Mount Eliza – July 2025 Bulletin Update

July has been a month of strong community engagement, international focus, and recognition at Rotary Mount Eliza. We kicked off with the Mt Eliza Farmers Market, where our ever-popular sausage sizzle raised funds and strengthened community ties.

We were privileged to hear from Judy Coultas, a seasoned Rotarian with global humanitarian experience, who launched “International Month” for August. Events will include a Zoom with a Ukrainian Rotary Club and a guest speaker from Russia—reminding us of Rotary’s role in fostering global understanding.

We also welcomed Jacquie Sherlock and Rebecca Orchard from the Rotary Mornington Peninsula Satellite Club. Their team’s work—from environmental restoration to sewing hygiene kits and volunteering with local food programs—shows how flexible Rotary models can drive diverse participation.

Two dedicated individuals were honoured with Paul Harris Fellowships: Merrilyn Hamilton-Smith (Sapphire) and Leigh Eustace, for their outstanding service and community advocacy.

Outgoing President Carolyn Such reflected on a successful year marked by support for health services, youth programs, international aid, and record-breaking fundraising. As Jim Young takes the reins as President, we look forward to another vibrant year supporting local initiatives, environmental projects, and global service—continuing to live Rotary’s motto: “Service Above Self.”

Looking ahead, key projects include support for the 55 Plus Club, the Men’s Shed, and Mornington Community Centre, along with environmental efforts like beautification and tree planting at local parks. Our club will also engage in the Peninsula Trail Project, expand vocational and youth development

Judy Coultas

Judy Coultas. With more than four decades of experience in international trade and 16 years of humanitarian work across developing countries, Judy exemplifies Rotary’s global spirit. She continues to engage in global dialogue through her work with U3A and the Australian Institute of International Affairs.

Judy encouraged us to stay connected to global issues and announced August as Rotary Mount Eliza’s “International Month.” Events will include:

A Zoom session with a Ukrainian Rotary Club
A guest speaker from Russia reflecting on past and present perspectives
Additional international engagement opportunities throughout the month

Her message was clear: “Rotary gives us the lens to understand the world—and our place in it.” At a time when many may feel overwhelmed by international events, Rotary offers a structured way to remain engaged, hopeful, and helpful.

There are many ways to join in the celebration, but here are a few activities to get you started:

Say it loud, say it proud! Let everyone in your social network know that you are a proud member by changing your Twitter and Facebook profile to the I’m a Proud Member, I’m a Proud Rotaractor, or I am a Proud Interactor graphic. Copy and save the graphic as your profile picture for August.
Exchange ideas. Do you have successful membership strategies that have worked well in your community? Share them on the Membership Best Practices Discussion Group.
We Are Rotary. Using the hashtag #WeAreRotary, post photos to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Vine of your club members at work in your community or abroad to show how Rotary makes a positive impact in the world.
Making a difference. Rotary clubs are known for the high-impact service projects they undertake locally and globally. Share stories about your service projects and how they improve lives on Rotary Showcase. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to see what Rotary members around the world are doing to celebrate Membership Month.
What does Rotary mean to you? Rotary members have pushed polio to the brink of eradication, delivered clean water to those in need, improved their local communities, provided scholarships to the next generation of peacemakers, and continued to do good in the world.
