Hi everybody

I am sure that everyone enjoyed and found very interesting Ross Kilborn's talk about the Peninsula Bay Trail at this week's Club Dinner Meeting.

Ross, who is President of the Rotary Club of Mornington, is leading this exciting project on behalf of the Peninsula Cluster of Rotary Clubs.

While this project is to celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia, it will be an ongoing venture for the next few years until completion.

As Ross explained there are opportunities for major works (hopefully funded by governments) together with local projects that can be undertaken by individual clubs.

At our next session of Club Visioning on Tuesday 9 March we will be able to further explore this project and its implications for our Club.

Thanks to Club Service Director Neil Heron for his participation in The Bay Trail Project. At future Club Nights we will be able to determine exactly how our Club participates in this worthy initiative.

Speaking of Neil, all members are encouraged to attend a special Pizza Evening at the Heron's place on Tuesday 2 March. It will be a fellowship evening as we enjoy our self-made pizzas in Neil & Helen's new wood fired oven. The cost of the night will be $35 and, depending upon COVID restrictions, partners are most welcome.

Finally, a reminder that the Farmer's Market is back on at the end of the month on Sunday 28th February. May I ask everyone to respond to George-Ann's request on their availability as soon as possible?

Until next time
Yours in Rotary
Sue

District Governor Mark Humphries and Past President Linda Humphries

Greetings to all members of the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza and other readers of this Bulletin.

As mentioned in this month's District Newsletter, February is Rotary's Peace Building and Conflict Prevention Month.

Rotary’s four roles in promoting peace are:
  • Practitioners: Our work fighting disease, providing clean water and sanitation, improving the health of mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies directly builds the optimal conditions for peaceful societies.
  • Educators: Our Rotary Peace Centres have trained over 1,300 peace fellows to become effective catalysts for peace through careers in government, education, and international organizations.
  • Mediators: Our members have negotiated humanitarian ceasefires in areas of conflict to allow polio vaccinators to reach children who are at risk.
  • Advocates: Our members have an integral role as respected, impartial participants during peace processes and in post-conflict reconstruction. We focus on creating communities and convening groups that are connected, inclusive, and resilient.

Until next time
Warm regards

St James Silo Art Work
Editor's travelogue

In January Robyn and I travelled to North East Victoria for a few days away at Milawa.

On one day during our trip we drove towards Benella and visited a number of small hamlets on the Yarrawonga road. The purpose of this outing was to visit places on the Silo Art Trail. Across Victoria a number of silos and large water storage tanks have had works of art painted on them by well known artists. Some of these images are quite spectacular.

We visited four small towns at Devenish, Goorambat, Tungamah and St James. Each has spectacular large-scale art works.

George James (GJ) Coles, later Sir George Coles, was born in Jung Jung in the Mallee on 28 March 1885. The Coles family moved to St James later in the 19th Century where George Coles Senior was a storekeeper.

In 1910, GJ purchased the shop from his father for 4500 pounds. Coles successfully ran this business and expansion quickly followed. In 1914, after a trip to America, together with his brothers Jim & Arthur, George opened the first Coles store in Smith Street, Collingwood, with the slogan "Nothing over a shilling!"

Although expansion slowed because of World War 1 and the Great Depression, by 1938 G J Coles & Co had 86 stores across Australia. By 1976 the company had 576 stores with a staff of over 36,000.

Sir George Coles died in 1977.  He never forgot St James and over many years he donated considerable funds to local community projects. He is fondly remembered in St James and his face adorns one of the town's silos.

Silo Art Work at St James Victoria

Currently, St James, which is 238 kilometres from Melbourne, has a population of 132. Together with other townships on the Silo Art Trail, an attempt is being made to revitalise the district as a tourist destination.

It is certainly worth a trip to view these magnificent works of art.

GJ Coles was the oldest of ten children. One of his younger brothers Edgar Barton (later Sir Edgar) Coles became the Company Secretary and was a key leader of the organisation for many years. An avid sportsman, Edgar Coles who was born in St James,  settled in Mt Eliza in the 1950s and in the early 1960s he developed the Coles Estate in Mt Eliza which includes streets such as Coles Court, Edgar Place and Barton Drive.

Auction Items for Golf Day
As reported by the organiser of our Annual Rotary Golf Day, Rotarian Past President David Rew, the day is already booked out for golfers.

All non golfer members are encourage to attend the lunch and participate in the after match festivities.

In order to raise further funds for Shine For Kids, David and his organising committee are looking for items that can be donated for auction on the day. If you have any suitable items please let David know.

Separately, David fas asked Jim Young to endeavour to collect wine that can be auctioned at the event.

Any Member, Friend or Honorary Member who is able to donate one or more bottles of wine is asked to contact Jim and let him know - jimyoung3@icloud.com

You may also have access to friends or family members who are in the wine business. If that is the case you are asked to see if they would be prepared to make a donation of wine that can be auctioned.

All donated wines will be auctioned either as individual bottles (for expensive wine) or in packs of six bottles. Donations from any wineries or liquor stores will be acknowledged on the day.

Thank you in advance for your generosity in supporting this important Club initiative.

SEX SCANDAL - REMEMBER WHEN COLUMN
Now that I have your attention, during our meeting at Toorak College on 2 February, every Rotarian who has not already made a contribution to the REMEMBER WHEN column was provided with a choice during the Sergeant's session - make a contribution to the Bulletin's Remember When Column or pay a $20 fine!

As no-one paid the fine, the Editor requests that members' written recollections be forwarded to him as soon as possible. He would really prefer to not have to ring or email asking for your memories!!!

LAUGHTER THE BEST MEDICINE
This week International Director, a keen follower of his share portfolio, has provided a number of cartoon jokes. Thank you Maurie!

What do you call it when a bunch of share markets show up in the same place - An investation!

What's the best way to make a small fortune on the share market - Start off with a big one!

My friend is an honourable, courteous and chivalrous guy. But he dislikes the share market. When I asked him why, he said: "Gentlemen prefer bonds!"

An economist, an accountant and a lawyer decided to gamble ... and that's how share markets came into existence!
