Last week’s meeting was a really good example of the use of Zoom as part of our program.  It was a very professional presentation on the Royal Flying Doctor Service, (RFDS).  The benefit is that we can have a great speaker even if they are out of the State or even the country.
Linking the topic with the three minute speaker was good too.  Who knew that Judy’s grandfather was there when the RFDS all started.
Our Board meeting this week endorsed the project to build a new BBQ trailer.  The details will be communicated separately.  Rowan and Bernie Edwards are well advanced.
All Directors have detailed plans and the key thing now is to ensure that fund raising activities are aligned to deliver the required funds aligned to expenditure plans.
The roster for the next Farmers Market will be issued shortly.  Given that we have so many members way it is important that we have maximum available effort to man the roster.

This Week's Speaker
This Week's Speakers

This Week's speaker was Jonathan Green who gave us a terrific insight via Zoom into the history and workings of
the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The RFDS is of great history and cultural significance to the people of Australia.  The organisation was founded by Rev John Flynn, who has a deep connection with the bush and the people who called it home. He witnessed the daily struggle of pioneers living in remote areas and had a vision to provide a "mantle of safety" for them."

"The RFDS fleet of aircraft and road service vehicles help more than 330,000 people every year - one every two minutes. We provide a wide range of vital health care services, from inter-hospital transfers by air and road, to specialist consultations including dentistry and mental health services"

Jonathan told us that "although driven by the same philosophies as its intent more than 90 years ago, the RFDS now offer markedly different services to its original operation.
Arguably, the greatest amount of growth and change has occurred in Victoria, where the RFDS undertakes a wide range of primary health programs complemented by an extensive patient transport service"

Jonathan reported that last year in Victoria, we had 17304 patient contacts, saved 27875 hours of travel for our patients and clients, transported 67,854 patients by road and 561 by air. 1839 transports were for suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patients and utilised 26 Road and Air bases to achieve this.

3 Minute Speaker
This week's 3 Minute Speaker was Judy Coultas
Judy presented lovely talk on the connections she has with the Royal Flying Doctor Service

I am very proud to be associated with the RFDS through the support and friendship my great uncle HV McKay, and my grandfather Sam McKay gave John Flynn in the 1920s to finally realise his long-term dream to create An Aerial medical service in outback Australia.

Because of the outstanding success of sales of the Sunshine combine harvester invented and manufactured by HV McKay and his family, they were able to set up a charitable trust which, to this day, has been a great contributor to the startup and development of the Flying Doctor Service throughout Australia.

My father was born in Argentina in 1908 because my grandfather was there, consolidating the export market for their agricultural equipment, especially the sunshine combine harvester, and was responsible for exporting to many countries including Russia and Canada in times that had only ships and written letters to promote these sales.

So, I am the third generation of the McKay family to be involved in selling Australian manufactured products and have spent 40 years travelling the world to do this, just like my ancestors!

As I see it, family history and influence offer a fascinating study and should not be buried by the pace of our lives today, especially those of the younger generations who do not always appreciate or understand the efforts and impact of their forefathers.

Brynton's Joke of the Week
Brynton's Joke of the Week

Everyone seems to be in such a hurry to scream 'racism' these days.

A customer asked, "In what aisle could I find the Guinness?"
The shop assistant asks, "Are you Irish?"

The guy, clearly offended, says, "Yes I am. But let me ask you something,

If I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian?

Or if I had asked for German Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German?

Or if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish?

Or if I had asked for a Taco, would you ask if I was Mexican?

Or if I asked for Polish sausage, would you ask if I was Polish?"

The shop assistant says, "No, I probably wouldn't."

The guy says, "Well then, because I asked for Guinness, why did you ask me if I'm Irish?"

The clerk replied, "Because you're in Bunnings."
