The Rotary Club of Mount Eliza recently celebrated a number of exceptional community members and organisations through its annual awards program, recognising those who consistently demonstrate service, leadership, inclusion and community spirit.
The evening highlighted the many ways individuals can make a difference, whether through environmental stewardship, creating welcoming community spaces, supporting people of differing abilities or providing opportunities for young people to thrive.
Community Service Award
The Community Service Award was presented to Raeleigh and Alan Speedie in recognition of their commitment to caring for the local environment. Through their regular walks around Mount Eliza, they collect litter from beaches and public spaces, helping to keep our community clean and encouraging others to take pride in their surroundings.
Their simple yet powerful actions demonstrate how small, consistent efforts can have a meaningful impact on the community and the environment.
Pride of Workmanship Award
The 2026 Pride of Workmanship Award was presented to the Cafe Mise En Place in Mount Eliza.
The award recognises those who take exceptional pride in their work and contribute positively to the community through their efforts. The cafe has become well known for its creative and thoughtful displays celebrating national days, community events and special occasions, helping to create a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere in the heart of Mount Eliza.
Their commitment to enhancing the local village experience brings enjoyment to residents and visitors alike.
Shine On Award
The Shine On Award was presented to Will Morrison
The Rotary Shine On program recognises individuals who actively contribute to their community and demonstrate outstanding achievement, often while overcoming personal challenges.
Will's contribution through Stories by the Sea Bookshop has been remarkable. He plays an important role in managing inventory systems, updating websites, processing orders, shelving books and supporting customers. His work helps manage thousands of books while also contributing to the smooth operation of the business.
His dedication, skills and positive attitude make him a valued member of the team and a worthy recipient of this year's award.
Stan Spencer Award
The evening's final recognition, the Stan Spencer Award, was presented to Sonia Duric from Stories by the Sea Bookshop.
Named in honour of the late Stan Spencer OAM, a respected educator and passionate advocate for children with disabilities, the award recognises outstanding contributions to education, training and support for young people.
Sonia was recognised for creating an inclusive and supportive workplace that provides meaningful employment opportunities for young adults of differing abilities. Through partnerships with training organisations and programs such as My Life, Stories by the Sea has become a place where young people can develop employability skills, build confidence and gain valuable workplace experience.
The bookshop's vision is simple but powerful: to create a space where everyone belongs. Today, the business supports a diverse team that includes many young people who identify as neurodiverse or have additional support needs, providing them with opportunities to learn, contribute and flourish.
The Stan Spencer Award includes a $500 grant to support the recipient's ongoing work and community impact.
