Nuclear Energy, Innovation And Australia’s Future

The Rotary Club of Somerville Tyabb recently hosted nuclear engineer and international energy adviser Jim Voss, President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Mount Eliza, for a fascinating presentation exploring the future of nuclear energy in Australia and around the world.
 

Drawing on decades of experience advising governments and international agencies, Jim shared insights into how modern nuclear reactors operate, advances in safety systems, and the realities of radioactive waste management.

Members were surprised to learn that a 1000 MW nuclear reactor requires only around 1200 kilograms of uranium annually compared with approximately 40 million tonnes of coal to produce the same amount of electricity.

The evening also explored growing international demand for nuclear energy as nations pursue lower emissions, greater energy security, and reliable baseload power. Discussion included workforce shortages in nuclear engineering, the impact of AUKUS, and emerging nuclear energy strategies across the Asia-Pacific region, including Vietnam.

Jim’s firsthand experiences investigating Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima provided important historical perspective on how lessons from past disasters continue to improve reactor safety and design today.

Most importantly, the evening encouraged informed and respectful discussion about Australia’s future energy options and the importance of education and scientific understanding in shaping public policy.
