Born in England in 1941, David's childhood took him from Essex to Scotland before he began training at the Thames Nautical Training College. Although his ambition was to join the Royal Navy, fate had other plans, leading him instead to a career with P&O in the Merchant Navy.
It was a remarkable start to working life. At just 19½ years of age, David was promoted to Fourth Officer and entrusted with the responsibility of standing watch aboard a 22,000-ton cargo passenger ship. One memorable night in the Red Sea, while navigating around fishing vessels, he earned the confidence of his captain after calmly handling a challenging situation on the bridge.
Away from the sea, another important chapter of David's life began when he met Grace. After knowing each other for only a few weeks, they decided to marry. They wed in 1963, raised two children and eventually chose to make Australia their home.
Like many who build a new life in Australia, David's career took many different paths. He worked in transport, joined his father-in-law's business, established his own concrete cutting company and later owned a timber business. Along the way there were plenty of lessons learned, including a few hair-raising moments that David recounts with humour.
A brief venture into the travel industry ended in disappointment. However, David views the experience as another chapter in a life defined by resilience rather than setbacks. Around the same time, Grace embarked on a successful career managing the National Golf Club, where she remained for many years.
In 1992, David entered the real estate industry by joining Blackburn Lockwood Real Estate in Mt Eliza. The business flourished, but it was his commitment to the wider community that became one of his proudest achievements.
When proposed council rating changes threatened to dramatically increase rates for Mt Eliza residents, David led a determined community campaign opposing the changes. Hundreds of residents rallied behind the cause, public meetings attracted large crowds, and the local media closely followed the campaign. Looking back, David regards this as one of the highlights of his life, demonstrating what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose.
After selling his real estate business in 2011, David and Grace remained connected to the community they had called home for decades. More recently, after living in their Jacksons Road home for 47 years, they made the difficult decision to move. Although they never imagined leaving, they quickly fell in love with their new home in Ranelagh Estate and have embraced the next chapter of their lives.
David's journey is one of adventure, determination, entrepreneurship and community spirit. From navigating ships across international waters to standing up for local residents and serving through Rotary, his story reflects the values of leadership, integrity and service above self.
