There are some people whose contribution is measured not by how often they're in the spotlight, but by how much would stop if they weren't there.
For almost twenty years, Rowan Miller has been one of those people.
Having joined the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza in January 2006, Rowan recently received the club's Meritorious Service Award, recognising years of dedication, practical expertise and quiet leadership.
While many members know Rowan as the person who always seems to have the answer when equipment needs repairing or an event needs setting up, few see the countless hours he contributes behind the scenes.
From helping establish the Mt Eliza Farmers' Market more than 15 years ago to designing the layout still used today, Rowan has played an integral role in one of the club's most successful community fundraising activities. Every rope, hook, marquee and barrier has been carefully planned to ensure the market can be safely and efficiently set up each month, even in challenging weather.
His commitment doesn't end when an event finishes.
After a barbecue or farmers' market, Rowan often spends several more hours cleaning, maintaining and servicing the club's equipment. He has created maintenance schedules, operating manuals and inspection processes to ensure everything remains safe, reliable and ready for the next event.
One of Rowan's proudest achievements has been designing the club's custom mobile kitchen. Rather than settling for an off-the-shelf solution, he worked through every detail to create a purpose-built facility that continues to serve the club today and will do so for many years to come.
As Rowan explained during our conversation:
"If I'm going to take hold of the baton, I take hold of it fully."
That philosophy is reflected in everything he does.
Despite receiving numerous recognitions over the years, including Paul Harris Fellow honours, Rotarian of the Year and now the Meritorious Service Award, Rowan remains remarkably humble. When asked what Rotary has meant to him personally, his answer was simple.
"I've made some good friendships."
He also believes Rotary is about finding where your own skills can make the greatest difference. His advice to prospective members is to come along, meet people, discover where you fit and find meaningful ways to contribute.
Rowan's story is a reminder that Rotary is built on many different talents. Some members lead meetings. Others organise events. Some raise funds, while others quietly ensure every piece of equipment works exactly as it should.
Together, those contributions create lasting impact in our community.
