Members of the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza were transported to northern Spain as Caryl Coulthard shared the story of her remarkable journey along the Camino de Santiago.

Caryl's pilgrimage began in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the French Pyrenees before following the historic Camino route across Spain to Santiago de Compostela. Carrying only the essentials in her backpack, she embraced both the physical challenge and the unexpected experiences that unfolded each day.

One of the most memorable aspects of her journey was the people she met. Fellow pilgrims came from around the world, each walking for their own unique reasons. Some were celebrating life, others recovering from illness, seeking spiritual reflection, or simply pursuing a personal goal. Despite their different backgrounds, the Camino created a shared sense of community and friendship.

Throughout the walk, Caryl stayed in traditional pilgrims' refuges, often for just one euro a night, and experienced extraordinary hospitality from local communities. Whether being welcomed into village festivals, sharing simple meals with strangers, or receiving directions from locals who recognised the scallop shell on her backpack, she found generosity at every turn.

She also shared one of the Camino's more mysterious moments, when a well-dressed elderly gentleman appeared just as she and her travelling companion had become lost, calmly pointed them in the right direction, and disappeared before they could properly thank him.

By the time she reached Santiago de Compostela, Caryl had transformed from someone who considered herself unfit into a pilgrim capable of walking up to 40 kilometres a day. Arriving at the magnificent cathedral and witnessing the famous Botafumeiro incense ceremony was a fitting conclusion to an unforgettable adventure.

Caryl's presentation reminded us that life's greatest journeys are often about far more than reaching a destination. They are about the people we meet, the challenges we overcome, and the memories that stay with us forever.

Thank you, Caryl, for sharing such a personal and inspiring story with our club.
