How will artificial intelligence reshape our communities, our workplaces and our schools? At our recent Rotary Club of Mount Eliza meeting, members were taken on a remarkable journey through the history of technological disruption and into the rapidly evolving world of generative AI.

We were delighted to welcome Tim Kitchen, former education specialist with Adobe and now a leading consultant supporting schools and universities to use AI effectively and responsibly.

A Journey Through Technological Change

Tim began by taking members back more than 5,000 years to the invention of papyrus in ancient Egypt around 3000 BC. From there, he walked us through the major technological milestones that have shaped civilisation, including the Gutenberg Printing Press in the 15th century, the motorcar, early photography, powered flight, the first computers and the birth of the internet.

Each of these developments dramatically altered how people lived, worked and connected. Yet none have been adopted as rapidly as today’s generative AI tools.

The Rise of Generative AI

Tim explained the distinction between traditional artificial intelligence and generative AI. While AI has existed as a concept since the 1950s, public awareness surged when ChatGPT was released in November 2022.

Within weeks, generative AI reached 50 million users, an adoption rate far exceeding that of the printing press, electricity, television or even the internet. Today, millions of people worldwide use AI tools weekly for drafting documents, planning travel, summarising information, translating text, coding and academic research.

For educators, the implications are profound. Tim’s current work focuses on helping schools equip students not only with digital skills but with critical thinking, creativity and AI literacy.

Opportunity and Responsibility

While the benefits are significant, Tim emphasised the importance of safe and ethical use. Members were encouraged to:

  • Start with purpose and use AI to augment thinking, not replace human judgement

  • Avoid uploading confidential or sensitive information

  • Be transparent when AI has assisted in producing work

  • Recognise that AI can simulate care, but it cannot replace genuine human connection

One of the most powerful reflections of the evening was the reminder that Rotary’s greatest strength is human care. While AI may assist with efficiency and creativity, it is people who build trust, community and compassion.

Rotary in a Changing World

As a club committed to service and leadership within our community, understanding emerging technologies is essential. Tim’s presentation provided valuable insight into how AI is reshaping industries, education and the future of work, while reinforcing the importance of ethical leadership.

We thank Tim for an engaging and thought-provoking evening and for challenging us to consider how we, as Rotarians, can thoughtfully embrace innovation while staying true to our values.
