Rotary is at its best when a good idea travels beyond borders, connects people and continues to create an impact long after the original project has finished.
At a recent Rotary gathering, Jenny Ibbotson, sister of Rotary Club of Mt Eliza member Carol Wallace, shared the story of an inspiring playground project that began several years ago in Cape Town, South Africa.
The project brought together Rotarians from Australia and South Africa to provide playground equipment to communities where children had very limited opportunities for safe and accessible play.
Working with Rotarians, including Wayne Jenkins from Mt Martha, two containers of playground equipment were collected and shipped to South Africa. Around a dozen playgrounds were subsequently installed at schools and community locations, including in low-income communities around Cape Town and as far as Atlantis.
For many of these children, the equipment represented a significant improvement in their everyday environment.
Jenny and Carol had the opportunity to visit a number of the locations where the equipment was stored and later return to see the playgrounds after installation. What they saw demonstrated just how much difference a relatively simple Rotary project could make.
The playgrounds provided children with opportunities to develop coordination, strength and physical skills. Just as importantly, they gave children a place to play together, make friends, learn to share and enjoy time together.
The impact was perhaps best understood by seeing the children themselves using the new equipment.
And now, the story may be coming full circle
Before Jenny left Cape Town, fellow Rotarians made a very simple request.
"You're going to Australia. Can you please organise another playground?"
That is the wonderful thing about Rotary. A project that begins in one community can inspire another project somewhere else, with relationships between Rotarians providing the bridge.
Jenny has brought that request back to Australia, and conversations are now underway about whether another playground project could become a reality.
It is a reminder that Rotary's impact isn't always measured by the size of a project. Sometimes it is measured by the number of children who get the chance to play, grow, learn and simply have fun.
And sometimes, one playground leads to another.
The next chapter of this story may be just beginning.
