District Grant Project: Playgrounds Bringing Joy Across Continents
Through the support of a District Grant and in partnership with Newlands Rotary, Cape Town, our club has helped make a lasting difference in the lives of children by installing 11 playgrounds in informal settlements on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa.

These informal settlements are some of the most under-resourced communities, where children often have few safe places to play and develop. The installation of playgrounds has provided not only a source of fun and joy but also opportunities for healthy physical activity, social interaction, and community pride.

Extending the Impact Beyond South Africa
The project’s impact does not stop at Cape Town. Thanks to the Rotary Overseas Relocation Program (RORP), playgrounds that would otherwise have been discarded are being shipped to other countries in Africa as well as to Pacific Island nations. In these places, local communities would never have been able to purchase or install playground equipment due to cost. By relocating and repurposing these playgrounds, Rotary has extended the reach of this project across borders and across oceans.

Sustainability in Action
One of the most remarkable aspects of this initiative is its sustainability. Instead of playgrounds ending up in landfill, they are given a second life in communities that need them most. This embodies the Rotary ethos of “Service Above Self”, demonstrating how resourcefulness and international cooperation can transform waste into hope.
A Model of Rotary Collaboration
This project shows Rotary at its best:
District and Club collaboration through grant support.
International partnership with Newlands Rotary, Cape Town.
Logistical expertise from RORP to transport and re-establish playgrounds.
Community empowerment by providing children with spaces that enrich their development and wellbeing.
Through this initiative, Rotary is not only helping children play — we are helping them thrive.
