The evening was far more than a planning session. It was an opportunity for members to share ideas, reflect on what makes our club successful and discuss how we can continue to grow while preserving the strong culture that has made the club such an important part of our community.
James spoke about his desire to empower every Rotarian to contribute in ways that suit their skills, interests and availability.
"Every member has something to contribute," he said. "Whether it's helping at a barbecue, mentoring a new member, organising a project or simply lending a hand when it's needed, every contribution matters."
A key focus for the year will be building capacity across the club. Rather than relying on a single person to hold important knowledge or manage major projects, the goal is to document processes, mentor new volunteers and ensure valuable experience is shared across the membership.
This approach will help safeguard the club's future while making it easier for members to step into new roles with confidence.
The discussion highlighted just how much knowledge exists within the club. Members acknowledged the incredible contribution of long-serving volunteers whose expertise keeps many of the club's activities running smoothly, from organising permits and community events to coordinating the monthly Farmers' Market.
Communications Director Yvonne Simpson shared an example of this work, explaining that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are being developed for key activities such as the Farmers' Market setup. These guides will preserve years of knowledge and make it easier for other members to assist whenever required.
Members also discussed the importance of welcoming new members while maintaining the club's strong traditions of fellowship, service and community impact. There was widespread agreement that fresh ideas and new perspectives are essential to Rotary's future, while respecting the experience and dedication of long-serving members.
President James also outlined several goals for the coming year, including:
• Empower every member to participate.
• Continue delivering meaningful local and international projects.
• Strengthen relationships with neighbouring Rotary clubs, the Satellite Club and the Mornington Peninsula Rotaract Club.
• Increase opportunities for Friends of Rotary to become involved.
• Grow membership while supporting existing members.
• Increase fundraising to expand the club's community impact.
• Continue supporting The Rotary Foundation and PolioPlus.
The evening reinforced what makes the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza unique: passionate volunteers, strong leadership, collaborative committees and a shared commitment to making a difference.
By preserving the knowledge of today's members while embracing new ideas and future leaders, the club is ensuring it remains well positioned to continue serving the community for many years to come.
