The evening was made even more special as we proudly presented a cheque for $8,132.50, raised through our annual Rotary Club of Mt Eliza Golf Day earlier this year. These funds will help Streetside Medics continue delivering essential healthcare to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
Founded by cardiologist Dr Daniel Nour in 2018, Streetside Medics began with a single mobile clinic operating from a van in Sydney. Today, the organisation has expanded to 16 clinics across Australia, including four in Victoria, with more planned as demand continues to grow.
Rather than expecting people experiencing homelessness to navigate a complex healthcare system, Streetside Medics brings healthcare directly to them. Their fully equipped mobile GP clinics operate alongside meal services, laundry facilities and other community support services, providing free, compassionate primary healthcare in a familiar and trusted environment.
Kate Datson, who oversees collaborations and growth for Streetside Medics Victoria, explained that many people experiencing homelessness have significant barriers to accessing healthcare. Building trust is essential, and it can often take five or six visits before someone feels comfortable stepping onto the van to see a doctor or nurse.
Volunteer nurse practitioner Annette shared how the organisation's team of doctors, nurses, paramedics, allied health professionals and community volunteers work together to provide much more than medical care. Volunteers spend time listening, building relationships and helping patients navigate ongoing healthcare, organise medications, attend hospital appointments and reconnect with longer-term GP services.
We also learned that homelessness extends far beyond rough sleeping. Many people are living in cars, couch surfing or staying in unstable accommodation, often making healthcare a low priority while trying to meet their most basic needs.
Since launching in Victoria in 2024, Streetside Medics has recorded more than 1,400 patient interactions, providing everything from chronic disease management and wound care to health screenings, medications and referrals for ongoing treatment.
The presentation highlighted the power of meeting people where they are, treating every person with dignity, respect and compassion.
