Dr Michael Galak - Russia Then and Now

At our recent Rotary gathering, Dr Michael Galak shared stories from his life that were both thought-provoking and entertaining.

Michael was born in the city of Odessa (now part of Ukraine) and after completing compulsory National Service as a Medic in the Soviet Army, he went on to study medicine, where he met his wife, Valentina.
In 1981, he left the USSR to come to Australia, where he had to learn English and worked as a doctor in Aboriginal Health. He was also became a Rotarian, being a member of Rotary Club of Goondiwindi. Michael is now retired and teaches Russian History at U3A Mornington and Glen Eira, as well spending time with his family.

Michael spoke about his life experiences, drawing on moments from history, cultural differences, and even light-hearted personal anecdotes that brought smiles to the room. His stories reminded us how powerfully human resilience, humour, and perspective shape the way people face challenges.

Through both serious reflections and entertaining tales, Michael highlighted the importance of understanding each other, listening deeply, and finding hope even in difficult times.

The evening was a wonderful example of Rotary’s spirit of fellowship and learning. We thank Michael for generously sharing his insights with us, and we look forward to many more evenings that connect, inspire, and bring us closer together as a community.
