President's Message - Carolyn Such

I am pleased to report that the Community Group project for Interplast has achieved its target of $25K.  The money has been sent to Interplast to allow them to get on with the project.  Members will remember that to objective is to send two expert nurses from Australia to Tonga.  The experts will train around 30 local nurses on all aspects of the job not just plastic surgery support.   Following the Covid period Tonga lost much of its local expertise.  Our project will help them get it back in a hurry.  More news after it happens.

Our Club hosted a meeting of Community Group clubs to hear about a fund raising project to provide a modern ultra sound probe to detect prostate cancer.  The project was brought to the Community Group by Frankston Sunrise who have decided to contribute $10K to the project which ha an ambitious target of $49K.  Our Board has confirmed that we will support the project but have yet to decide on the level of support.

Last week we heard a report back from our two students who attended National Youth Science Forum  (NYSF) during January.  Members will remember that NYSF is a two week residential career program for Year 1 students interested in pursuing  a career in science.  I would have to say that their presentation was outstanding.  We learnt a great deal about them and what happens at NYSF.  Judging by the number of questions members also gained a great deal from their presentation.

Members of the Youth Committee have been back to Mount Eliza Primary to contact the EarlyAct Club.  Their Club is gearing up for a Wheelchair for Kids Wheelathon during the year.

Cathryn Leonard is also doing the spadework for the Musical Enrichment Program (MEP)  The MEP is
scheduled for May 9th and will involve us hiring two small buses to transport students to Hamer Hall.

Thanks to Yvonne Simpson for the work she is doing to  update the Club Facebook page regularly.    If you haven’t looked recently you will see that gives a very good picture of recent Club activities and shows members doing things.  It would be great if you could like and share if you  are on Facebook .
