The thoughts of President Ross

So, by the time PP JIM circulates this Bulletin it will be 2020. At the very least, it will mean I’m going downhill and PE Sue will benefit from 20 / 20 vision. Actually, it is 6 / 6 (metric).

I will have 6 / 6 hindsight. I am the first to admit that if I had my time again, I would finesse a few things. That said, we live in a World of actions and their consequences. I had delayed some actions and activities due to timing and the advice of others; not cluttering the program / non - availability of people / superior and new ideas.

In addition I await some details from people so we can proceed apace. Twice, Ray Manchester unwittingly solved matters (read: got me out of a quandary).

Also, once or twice serendipity played its part or I just got lucky. One of these involves our plan to have a vintage  / veteran car exhibition during 2020. Christmas Eve, I walked into the Mornington Golf Club spike bar to find the Yearly gathering of said aficionados. I met their coordinator, John Becker. How good is Golf. 😂. Actually they only use the bar and bistro.

New Year Resolution ?

At a recent select gathering at The Farmers’ Market and Bunnings, we determined by a snap survey, that (with regard to The Bulletin) a number of our happy band do not read key information.

Like George - Ann’s rosters; or the fact that (see PP Jim’s article on our New Year barbecue) variously it is CASH ONLY, the amount ($20) the location or time. Really.
.
It was further determined that some of the members who go to a lot lot lot of effort to arrange events, get into medium / high dudgeon and or a hissy fit and take it out on Da Prez. 😂

Having been twice wed, with assorted assignations between, I merely flinch, look humble and down - cast and say sorry Linda M / Carolyn. (Insert name of choice 😬).

So, I wish you and yours all the good things that you wish for yourself.

(Being a Republican, I cannot award honours to the ‘usual suspects’; but you must know that I appreciate your support.

The P. To  - Maine gang. MARK my words.
(Above and below).

Quiet achievers. Yay. 😁

District Governor Elect Mark Humphries

Happy New Year everyone. As a club in 2019 we achieved great things, in 2020 we will again achieve great things. We need to keep in mind the harsh conditions that are affecting many parts of Australia at present. Fires are raging across this great country of ours. A large part of our District is currently experiencing hard times, like last year we supported our communities by donating tools and cash, I am sure that the call will go out again this year. Please support our communities.

Linda and I will be away for all of January, away on Rotary training. It will be an exciting time meeting up with over 500 incoming District Governors and listing to motivated Rotarians. Have a great new year, lets continue the great work we do for our communities, lets grow our club and have fun.

Stories
Happy Hogmanay
As elsewhere around the globe, Rotary is very active in the United Kingdom with over 55,000 members in over 1850 clubs.
In Scotland Rotary District 1010, with over 3000 members in 90 clubs,  covers the north of the country. District 1020 with nearly 50 clubs covers southern Scotland while District 1230 covers central Scotland and has 56 clubs.
Rotary in Scotland commenced in 1912 when the Rotary Club of Glasgow became International Club number 60.
In Scotland New Year's Eve is referred to as Hogmanay. As the last day of the year, Hogmanay is celebrated across Scotland. The name is derived from from Gaelic and Norse observances and include the giving and receiving of gifts and visiting the homes of friends and neighbours.
There are many customs associated with Hogmanay. The most widespread is the practice of first-footing, which starts immediately after midnight. This involves being the first person to cross the threshold of a fiend or neighbour and involves the giving of symbolic gifts such as whisky, shortbread, coal, fish, salt or black fruit cake (black bun).
The first-foot is supposed to set the luck for the household for the coming year.
The Hogmanay custom of singing "Auld Lang Syne" by poet Robbie Burns, is now commonplace in many countries.
Many Scots will continue the celebration through to New Year's Day evening when a special dinner will be saved.
To all Rotarians, Honorary Members and Friends of the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza, "Happy Hogmanay".

Rotary Christmas Gifts
Rotarian Alex Anderson reports that the Christmas Gifts donated by the members of the RCME at our Christmas Party/ Dinner Dance on 30 November were distributed to local schools on Friday 13 December.

Alex and several police delivered the gifts to four local schools:
*  Mount Eliza Primary School
*  Kunyung Primary School
*  Mornington Park Primary School
*  Mornington Primary School

The gifts were selected to go to children in specific need. One of the many recipients was "Chantelle", a young lady in Year 5 who is being cared for by her grandparents as her own parents are dysfunctional and not able to look after her.

All of the contact points are known to the Police, and some Rotarians, as schools with a number of disadvantaged children.

The gifts were greatly appreciated by principals, teachers and other staff at the schools.

Alex was assisted in the distribution by Senior Leading Constable Greg Krause (Paul Harris Fellow) from Mornington and Senior Constable Neil Prosser from Somerville who is the son-in-law of Jan and Rick Berg.

Ticket Please
Three engineers and three human resources consultants were travelling by train together to a professional conference.

At the station the three HR professionals each purchased a ticket to their destination. They then watched as the three engineers only purchased one ticket.

As they boarded the train one of the HR people asked, "How are three of you going to travel with only one ticket?"

"Watch and you'll see." was the response.

When the conductor was due to come around the three engineers all stood up and went to the restroom.

The conductor checked each ticket in the carriage and then knocked on the restroom door, "Ticket please", he said.

The door opened just a crack and a single arm emerged holding a ticket. The conductor took the ticket and moved on.

The HR consultants saw this, agreed that it was a good plan and decided to do it on the return journey.

After the conference, at the station an HR consultants purchased just one ticket.

The three HR consultants were amazed to see that the engineers didn't buy any tickets at all.

"How will you travel without any ticket at all?" asked one of the HR consultants.

"Watch and see." came the reply.

The conductor was expected shortly after the train commenced its journey so the three HR consultants crammed into the rest room and the three engineers all went into the restroom in the next carriage.

A couple of minutes later one of the engineers left their restroom and went to the HR consultants restroom. He knocked on the door and said, "Tickets please!"
