Melbourne Cup
The Monday evening before the Melbourne Cup has been a wonderful occasion for our Club over the last two years at Le Hoang, thanks to the fabulous organisational skills of Tim Action.

Hopefully next year we will be back celebrating Australia's greatest race.

In history things have a habit of repeating or coming close to so doing.

In 1917, Richmond & Collingwood drew a football match during the regular VFL season. Collingwood went on the premiership. The two teams did not draw another match until 2020 and they drew again and then Richmond went on to win the flag.

The COVID-19 Pandemic started in 2019, just over 100 hundred years after the Spanish 'Flu pandemic of 1918 to 1920.

Can looking back at Melbourne Cup winners give any pointers for this year's race?

The 1918 Cup was won by NIGHT WATCH at odds of 12 to 1. The horse carried 42.18 kg and took 3:25.75 minutes to win the race.

The 1919 Cup was won by ARTILLERYMAN at odds of 10 to 1. Running a time of 3:24.50 minutes the horse carried 47.17 kg.

The 1920 Cup was won by POITREL carrying 68.5 kg. At odds of 8 to 1 this horse ran the journey in 3:25.75 minutes.

The Editor has arranged a Melbourne Cup Sweep for members of our Club.

This winner(s) will received a bottle of wine if their horse wins the Cup (if they claim their prize by 9.00 pm on Tuesday 3 November - email james.young03@bigpond.com )

Because we have more members than horses in the race, a number of horses have two Rotarian jockeys!

The draw is (you have to trust me!!):

1. Anthony Van Dyck - Judy Coultas

2. Avilius - Hardy Juraschek

3. Vow and Declare - Chris Angerer

4. Master of Reality - Graham Reid

5. Sir Dragonet - Pauline McFarlane

6. Twilight Payment - Tony Kafrouni, Linda Morris

7. Very Elleegant - Ray Manchester

8. Mustajeer - David Rew

9. Startium Albion - Kay McCauley

10. Dashing Willoughby - Neil Heron, Jim Young

11. Finche - Rowan Miller

Laughter the Best Medicine
A man had been convinced by his lawyer to buy a racehorse. He desperately wanted the horse to be a Melbourne Cup winner.

Unfortunately this was not to be.

After thirty starts the horse had not one a race and usually finished last.

As the horse was entered into a race at country meeting the frustrated owner took it aside and whispered into its ear, "Horse, you win today or your will pull a milk cart tomorrow morning!"

The starting gates open and all of the horses took off, except for the angry owner's horse, which lay down on the grass and went to sleep.

He raced up, glared at the horse and yelled, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"

The horse, half asleep, replied, "I have to get up at three in the morning!"

Melbourne Cup Day in 1955 was on the 5 November.

A man who lived at Number 5 Main Street caught the 55 bus to work.

At work he discovered that his boss had arranged for him to be moved into office number 5.

At lunch time he looked at the day's Sun newspaper and discovered that the Melbourne Cup was Race Number 5.

The fifth horse in the face was named "Old Fifty-five" and its price was 5 to 1.

The man looked in his wallet and discovered that he had exactly 5 pounds..

He raced to the local pub at 555 Johnson Street where an illegal SP bookie was operating.

Feeling that it was his lucky day and with so many omens he bet his 5 pounds on number 5.

Sure enough, it ran fifth!

Q. What do you call a person from Sicily who fixes horse races?

A. Rigatoni
