President Carolyn's Notes

It was lovely to have another very successful golf day on Friday 19th April.  The weather was quite co-operative at least initially, bright sunshine followed by intermittent showers.  Financial returns have not yet been finalised so watch this space.  Thanks once again to David and Grace and all their team.  We are now able to support two great organisations, Code 9 which supports PTSD suffered by police and also Interplast which delivers surgical support to countries around the Pacific and SE Asia.
On Tuesday 23rd April we had as guest speakers Phil and Joyce Ogden from the Rotary Club of South Launceston.  Phil and Joyce are mid-way through a tandem bicycle trip from Adelaide to Sydney via Melbourne.  Their purpose is to visit Rotary clubs along the way and to educate new members and re-energise older members in what a fantastic project End Polio Now is.
We all know that we are well advanced in polio eradication but its not over yet.  Phil and Joyce are extremely passionate on the subject.  This is their second ride.  The first time they raised $38000.  The Rotary Clubs of Mount Eliza, Mornington and Somerville Tyabb were present and pledged to donate an extra $500 each to the end polio cause.  As well as Club donations, they are encouraging all Rotarians to ask family and friends for just $6 each so that we can knock polio for six.   If anyone wants to make a personal donation I have the details.
Thank you to everyone who helped today at the Anzac Day Service.  Bernie applying for council permits, Annette and Carol afternoon teas and handing out programs, Jamie and Ian with the help from Leigh and Adam,  to our President Carolyn for laying the wreath. It was truly a combined effort. The attendance keeps improving and it was great to see the Girl Guides attend for the first time. I remember the first service that we organised years ago was about 10 people.  A particular thanks to Linda for her organisation of the event.  It isn’t just what happens on the day itself its all the follow up to get it to happen and get the numbers that we are getting now.  Well done Linda.

End Polio Now
Joyce and Phil Ogden's "End Polio Now" Bike Ride Fund Raiser
Rotarians Phil and Joyce are ardent bike riders from South Launceston who have chosen to raise funds for the fight to End Polio, the key project for Rotary all around the World. They are on their second ride at present from Adelaide to Sydney. Their first was across the Nullabor. They are roughly half way on their journey and we were lucky enough to have them reach Mt Eliza on our meeting night. They are visiting about 60 clubs during their ride. Phil and joyce are riding a high tech collabsible tandem bike called "Toucan" (a nice play on words)and carry everything they need with them in panniers ie no support vehicle! They ride up to 100km a day with very few rest days. Not a bad effort for a couple in their late seventies.
Their pitch derives from a cricketing theme  -   Hit Polio for a Six.    They want every person they come across to donate $6. This includes all Rotarians in each club they attend and the general public they come across. Each of the clubs that attended our meeting, Mt Eliza, Mornington and Somerville - Tyabb, donated $500 which easily met that objective. Well done those clubs.

Phil and Joyce gave probably the most concise and informative presentation on the Polio project we have seen and emphasised that we have a narrow window of opportunity if we are to succeed. They explained the two different vaccines, dead virus via an injection and alive virus via the drops on a sugar pill. The problem with the live one is that the patient wont catch Polio but there is a small possibility it could develop in to a "wild virus" after many cycles through the food chain. Most people of the world get the injection but in some remote villages children get the easy to administer sugar pill. It is estimated that it will cost over $4.8 billion to eradicate polio by 2027 and it is up to us to provide the push required. Let's hope we make polio the second eradicated disease after Small Pox and Rotary would have done it!

Three Minute Speaker: Brendan Hoban
A solution to Social Media/Internet Woes
Imagine if you will that somebody has developed an app that could identify not only the IP address, but the name and address of everyone posting on the internet.

Spam would cease to exist.

Sexting would disappear.

Phising, seeking your personal details for money purposes would stop.

Scamming and identity theft, when you can quickly identify the fraudster, would evaporate.

Trolls would be exposed for the cowardly weaklings they really are.

Heavens above, political misinformation would be exposed instantly.

Society would be assured that secretive malcontents were identified, and their ill intentions exposed.

Journalists would be able to invoice those who have appropriated their work and posted it on the internet.

Our children and grandchildren would be safer, could gain confidence and realise their potential as young adults without internet influencers.

Our security services would be all over it (any trying to conceal it.) It would expose foreign actor’s actions to influence elections and lobby or blackmail our governments and parliamentarians.

Social media would of course resist as they thrive on the anonymity of their posters but could no longer claim that they have no responsibility for the content. Social media are now attempting to colonise every moment of your mind.

Why hasn’t someone already done this?

But, perhaps they already have, but they are just trying to monetise it, or militarise it, or politicize it!

 Imagine!
