President's Message - John Welsh

Hi Fellow Rotarians,

Stories
This Week's Speaker
Peter Anderson from Belmont Rotary Club, Perth

Peter Anderson Zoomed in from Perth o speak about how the Blue Trees Project came into being.  Their motto kicking the stigma one blue tree at a time instils the aim to highlight the trauma and tragedies of mental health

Sadly, the Blue Tree story is not unique, but the legacy of Jayden Whyte is. The Blue Tree Project has flourished into a charity helping change the way we talk about mental health after Jayden Whyte took his own life in 2018. The blue trees now dotted across Australia and other parts of the world, act as beacons of hope & conversation starters.

The Blue Tree project organises a range of events to engage with communities in regional and rural locations. These events include painting days, sports rounds and music festivals.
We create engaging spaces at events to help raise awareness and educate the public on mental health.

Many thanks to Bernie Edwards and Neil Heron for their wonderful technology talents to bring this Zoom presentation to us.

This Week's 3 Minute Speaker
Ray Manchester gave a hearty 3 minute talk on past members Len Christie and Carl Seales and his wife Elizabeth from last Century!! He related many stories, one of which included a Fund raiser at Mornington Racecourse, attended by Prof Don Esmore, Alfred Heart and Lung team.  Max Walker the main speaker, arrived by helicopter.
They managed to raise $8,500 which was a stirling effort
He then spoke of the 11 week safari with Carl Seales visiting over 80 Rotary Clubs in a model T Ford which was named T for Transport. 11 Rotarians and their wives toured with him each week.

Zone 8 Trial
After the guest speaker finished, the club held a "straw poll" to see if we supported the proposed trial to introduce a new system of organisation above the club level. Simply, Districts would no longer be the structure above the Club level. All of Zone 8 (Australia & Oceania) would have one body to administer Rotary and support all Clubs. The advantages would be to modernise the processess and systems of Rotary, streamline processes, be more cost efficient and enable quicker and more targetted assistancefor Clubs and individuals. The final structure is still to be formulated but Rotary needs the support of clubs if they are to proceed to the next stage of the process. President John will have a vote to report if our club supports this proposal. The discussion was thoughtful and engaging with both sides of for and against well promolgated. There is definitely some concerns that the trial may not reach its goal and is too vague in its structure which could result in a messy return to what we have. On the other hand, Rotary does need to change and modernise as the present model is not attracting enough new members and we need to try new changes. In the end the poll at the meeting was 15 for, 7 against and one abstension. The vote included two proxy votes in favour received by the Secretary. John would like to thank all the members who were part of the poll and the discussion and for their frank views and support.
Welcome Back Rowan
         smiley He's Back!!smiley

The Club was excited to welcome back Rowan to the weekly meetings after his recovery from his extensive medical procedure last year. It was fantastic to see him fit and well. He has also resumed "light duties" for the Club (in his terminlology which for most of us is full time activity).  As a result you would have seen him working at the market on Sunday. Well done Rowan.

Brynton''s Joke of the Week
This is actually funny!!
Did you hear this story of this couple. They were always arguing. Their
neighbours were surprised that they didn’t kill each other.
Well, one day the woman was caught stealing food from a grocery store.
She went before the judge and pleaded quality.
The judge held up a can of peaches that she stole and asked her how
many peaches are in this can?
She said that there were six.
With that, the judge said for each peach your sentence is a day in jail.
From the back of the court room her husband jumped and yelled,
She also stole two cans of peas!
