President's Message

Hi all,
Another excellent meeting this week. We welcomed a number of guests who came to see how our Club operates as well as a couple of partners who came to hear our guest speaker, Sharn Coombes. Sharn did not disappoint and enthralled us all with her exploits in law, in the sporting field,  community service and of course her successes on “Australian Survivor”.
We continue to strive to help other communities and at present the demands seem more pressing than usual. We have had floods, storms and Covid. This week Rotary is focussing on Ukraine. We can help the humanitarian efforts in Ukraine individually and as a Club by donating through the Rotary Foundation which has  set up a special fund that directs money to Rotary in Ukraine. We can guarantee the proper use of these funds. Any money given to Foundation before April 30 will go to the Ukraine fund raiser. The Club has decided the money raised at the Community Committee’s Afternoon Tea on Sunday April 3 at the Moriss’s will be put to this cause.
A positive sign for our work in the community came with the recommencement of “Eat Up”. 900 sandwiches made by the students at Peninsula Grammar were delivered by Rotarians David Rew, Carolyn Such and Phil Key to 12 local schools to supply lunches to students who do not have lunch supplied from home. It is very rewarding to see how grateful the schools are for these donations.
The film night held to raise funds for “PolioNow” was a great success. Our cluster of clubs held three showings of “The Duke” and the film lived up to its hype as a “feel good”, light hearted comedy. It was enjoyed by all and the showing we attended raised over $300 for “PolioNow”.
Well, we have the Farmers Market this weekend, Rtn Keith Kimpton speaking on the intriguing topic “Wilbur to Walters” at our next meeting, the Great Aussie Hike on Friday April 1& Saturday April 2 followed by the Afternoon Tea at the Moriss’s on the Sunday. A very demanding ten days. Remember that the Afternoon Tea meeting replaces the Tuesday April 12 meeting. It was decided to move the Afternoon Tea meeting to a week earlier than the planned Sunday April 10 as many members are away that week with school holidays and Easter plans.
It is pleasing that all the members on the health watch list are recovering and/or responding well to treatment. Rowan is now over his infection and is now exercising and Kay is recovering from her bout of COVID. My thanks to Maurie who keeps a close eye on the welfare of members and keeps us informed on members progress. See you all next week, cheers Neil

Induction - Phil Key

The Induction of Phil Key
Last week Phil Key was inducted into the Club. Phil was a Rotarian when living in Montrose and has a keen interest in community service. His classification is Real Estate and was lately with Stockdale & Lego although he has now retired. He and his wife Di recently moved to Mount Eliza and Phil has attended a number of our meetings as a guest. He will be a memmber of Linda's Community Avenue of Service. Phil has made a great impact in our club already and we welcome him most waermly into our ranks.

Guest Speaker Sharn Combes
Guest Speaker Sharn Coombes
Sharn has an impressive resume including Crown Prosecutor, Defense Barrister, legal rights advocate, community service advocate, mother of four, charity fund raiser and, famously, a twice runner-up of Survivor Australia. (In fact she is the only competitor that has never had her torch extinguished - what a player!). Sharn had no difficulty holding the attention of our members as she gave us a synopsis of her life and the values that drive her. From and early age she was determined to stand up for the rights of her fellow humans and followed a pathwy into Law to allow her to fulfill this passion. She inspired us with her character strengths of determiation, ability to focus on a task and courage. Her success in Law on both sides of the fence bears testament to this. It became quite clear that she had all the attributes to succeed in whatever she tackled. This was exemplified in the reality show "Survivor Australia" and even though she never won, you could argue that she also never lost. It was agreat presentation and I am sure we could have listened to Sharn late into the night. The RCME thanks her for a most interesting and compelling presentation and congratulate her on her achievements to date. I am sure more will follow.

Centenary Project  -  The Bay Trail
UPDATE
The first working session on the rehabilitation of the railway land along the proposed Bay Trail was comleted on Wednesday. Charlie and Marty from The Friends group along with Rotarians Caryl, John Welsh, Di Horscroft and myself and 11 students from Peninsula Grammar with their teacher Paul carried out a weeding programme in preparation for planting in May. The students used secateurs to collect all the Watsonia seed heads and removed boneseed plants. They filled more than 6 large garden bags and disposed of them in a skip. It was a most productive session and bodes well to some significant work being done in the future. The Rotary Club of Mt Eliza is purchasing the first lot of 200 indigeneous plants from the Briars nursery shortly to be ready for planting in the coming weeks. The planting plan defines what we can plant so special stock needs to be grown before we can plant more.  Future work will include seed collection, further weed removal and caring for the new plants. Many thanks to all involved.
Charlie and Marty at the site. We will print photos of the "workers" when we get permission. Note the absence of Watsonia now!
The Bay Trail is the Centenary Project of our cluster of Rotary Clubs. One of the key sections is the missing link in the region our Club covers - Moorooduc Station to Mornington. The great news is that the local federal member Greg Hunt, is supporting a grant of $2 million of federal funding for the Mornington Mt Eliza link. However, for  3 clubs, Mt Eliza, Mt Martha and Mornington the critical piece is Moorooduc to Mornington and connecting the Harap Creek Trail to the Briars, so more funding will be required. Keep lobbying the politicians.

"Right now the Council has a grant application with the Regional Tourism infrastructure  Fund. We need as many people as possible to support this.
CAN YOU PLEASE THIS WEEK  via your newsletter, at your meeting etc ask all members  to send a simple email to the Minister for Tourism supporting this. martin.pakula@parliament.vic.gov.au
It can be as simple as

Dear Minister Pakula
I write in support of the application of the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council for a Regional Tourism Infrastructure Grant to complete the Moorooduc to Mornington Section of the Peninsula Trail.

If they want to write a letter or call they can do that too.

Level 36, 121 Exhibition Street, Melbourne, VIC 3000
(03) 8392 2221

If they want to add information about this being our Centenary Project and the value to our local economy through tourism they can do that too."

I am also adding my support to this and ask as many of you as possible to do this. Without State Government funding it will be so difficult to get this section built. So get writing and shake Spring St into action for our Centennary Project.  Thank you, Neil

Driving Test

A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and asked his Dad if he could start using the family car.

The Dad said he’d make a deal with his son, “You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut. Then we’ll talk about the car”

The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he’d settle for the offer and they agreed on it.

After about six weeks, the Dad said, “Son, you’ve brought your grades up and I’ve observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I’m disappointed you haven’t had your hair cut.”

The boy said, “You know, Dad, I’ve been thinking about that, and I’ve noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there’s even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair.”

His Dad replied, “Did you also notice that they all walked everywhere they went?”

A Funny True Story = Speed Trap

Police Officer Bryant found a perfect hiding place for watching for
speeding motorists.

One day, the officer was amazed when everyone was under the speed limit,
so Bryant investigated and found the problem.  10 year old Dennis was
standing on the side of the road with a huge hand painted sign which said
"Radar Trap Ahead." A little more investigative work led the officer to the
boy's accomplice, another boy about 100 yards beyond the radar trap with a
sign reading "Tips" and a bucket at his feet, full of change.
