International Committee South African Project Carol Allen has returned from South Africa with several opportunities for the club to look at after her visit to a district conference while over there which she will present to the club International Evening The international spit Roast evening on April 2 at Carolyn’s home was a success with a profit of just over eight hundred dollars for the dinner and just on two thousand dollars for the raffle. An opportunity for fellowship and a fundraiser for international projects, the event was very well attended, and everyone seemed to enjoy the evening despite the weather not being ideal. Fund raiser raffle. The International fundraising wine raffle was once again a great success, thanks to Maurie. The winner was Keith Den Hartog, so it was great to see that the benefit went to one of our new members. Wheelchairs for Kids We will invite Russell Hayes from Wheelchairs for Kids to speak at a meeting. We will also be involved in activity which Carolyn will be involved in at Mt Eliza Primary and we will organize our donation for WFK. Polio Plus On April 23, Phil & Joyce Ogdon from the Rotary Club of South Launceston joined us as they continue their 'End Polio Now' Bike Ride around Australia. This provided us with an opportunity to make a donation of $500 to Polio Plus, which was further added to with $500 each from the Mornington and Somerville clubs. We have also been approached by the Rotary Club of Rosebud to support a film night which I believe will be on Friday 24 May. As Polio Plus is part of our International portfolio, it would be great if we could get behind this initiative. Carolyn will provide some detail and we will have further information to support the event and promote it to club members. Support for the Satellite Club Our satellite club is doing great work in providing funds to eliminate trachoma and it would be terrific if we could add our support with a donation perhaps $250 or $500 Jenny Baker ROTARY FILM NIGHT – The Way, My Way FRIDAY 24th May at 7.00 pm The Rotary Foundation is holding a FILM NIGHT at the Peninsula Cinema, Rosebud on Friday, 24th May at 7.00 pm. All Rotarians are encouraged to attend along with family members & friends. The highly rated film is THE WAY, MY WAY, a captivating true story of a stubborn, self-centred Australian man who decides to walk the 800-kilometre-long CAMINO de Santiago pilgrimage route through Spain. Based on Bill Bennett’s best-selling memoir of the same name this charming tale sees the main character undertaking this transformative journey without really knowing why he is tackling it. The film details his adventures on the trip and the people that he meets on the way such that it will change him and his outlook on life forever. El Camino, Camino de Santiago and The Way all refer to the network pf paths that lead to the tomb of St James in Santiago de Compostela. It is estimated that around 6 million people walk at least some part of the Camino every year. Trekking the UNESCO World Heritage listed Camino de Santiago is viewed as a profound spiritual voyage as you discover fascinating towns, buildings and the beautiful countryside of Norther Spain and Southern France. Tickets are $21.50 which includes an $11.50 ticket cost, around $9 to the Rotary Foundation and the Humanitix fee. Proceeds of this event will go towards the END POLIO NOW campaign. I believe the whole Club was thrilled to see Tony Duong presented with the Pride of Workmanship Award. an extremely deserving recipient. We are presently working on the presentation of the Shine On Award to the Lollipop man at Peninsula School. Working on emails to and from Peninsula School The Community Award and the Stan Spencer Award recipients has been chosen and we are presently working towards the completion of these. We have been approached by Mt Eliza SC to help fund 30 I AM MINDFUL packs to be distributed throughout the school. We have spoken to the producers of these packs and they, along with Mt Eliza SC Student Welfare staff will be presenting to us at a future meeting. More info to come. Suzie Adam
