There's this President who jumps out of the window after Changeover; on the way down he's heard to call 'So far, so good'.
The individuals in any great club [as ours] when their individual efforts are combined, total more than 100 per cent; a mathematical impossibility. But we are multi - skilled and complement each other without complaint. How many others in the community know how to disassemble a playground and ship it overseas? Let alone at our age.
We ourselves as individuals are 'ordinary people' who others walk past without knowing our special calling. The most common question I am asked about involvement is a nonplussed "Why?". Do we not have 'better' things in our lives? I say, different things in our lives; some work, some are retired, some assist others, many [of us, at least] have families, grandchildren and even friends!
District require us to 'think outside the box' and not be hide - bound by captive thinking; lest we become irrelevant to those we seek to serve. To look at the intensity of members' efforts, not just its length. As Steve Daly said to me on the weekend ‘to serve our community, we need Service with impact’.
We do not say 'LONG Service above Self'; ask any of our beneficiaries.
A truck driver is no more or less important than the person who loads it.
