President's Message

The thoughts of President Ross.

So he answer to the question last week is related to the need for change; the need to adapt. Whereas the wine label used Braille tactile writing, the banknotes utilise a sequence of raised ‘dots’ that serve a similar purpose for a vision  - impaired person. Their pattern differs from 5 10 20 50 in Braille. The need for change was applied.

While we are  on the subject, who (else) noticed the handiwork on the cheque that Brynton presented to Jennifer Hayes on Tuesday night? I thought (although the instigators were too modest to fess up) it just goes to prove the Old Armenian saying: If you want to hide an elephant, put it in the middle of your front yard.
There was a prize for any member who, unassisted, noticed the items, and pointed them out to me. I did expect John Gilbert to say something; I even drove John home as his birthday treat, but still no comment. Being a humble man, and wishing to further increase my ‘preferred President’ rating into double digits, I’ll  probably give the prize to John anyway.

We are blessed to have in our midst a person as dedicated to her calling as Jennifer Hayes. It is clear to me that the choice of Jennifer as our chosen recipient of the Stan Spencer Award was well - received by all.

Jennifer told us that she enjoys her vocation immensely and is well supported by her peers.

PP David Rew held our attention with his prècis description of the recent travel he and Grace undertook.

Not for the Rew folk to bask in the sun of a Scottish summer, when there’s golf to be played and ‘narrow boating’ to undertake.

David’s description of their visit to the Cold War bunkers, and a visit to his old maritime training school made me feel deprived!

                    ****************
We are delighted that the team from Blue Croc, our newest Corporate Member were able to come and present details of their Company to us. Likewise, to outline the developing relationship we have with them to help our community.
We await their agreement to our joint promotional material, so Rotary Mt Eliza can approach potential members and clients of a joint service.

                  ****************
Carolyn and Linda and Brendan are developing a special 100 Years of Rotary event. We will be holding a veteran / vintage car exhibition next Year (during a date to be considered by Brendan, because of his travels).

We believe that at the very least we can get our Cluster involved, if not a larger part of District. More information as it evolves.

District Governor Elect Mark Humphries

November is Rotary International The Rotary Foundation Month. To mark this event and to raise money for The Rotary Foundation, we are fortunate indeed to have visiting Australia Past Rotary International President K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran.

Ravi will speak at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club on the wonderful contribution and achievements of The Rotary Foundation globally in preventing disease, providing clean water, supporting education, growing local economies, saving mothers and children and promoting peace. Understanding a discussion
A man walks into Bunnings... he picks up a can of fly spray ....
A man walks into Bunnings... he picks up a can of fly spray .... And he says
Is this stuff good for mosquitoes?’ No, comes the reply. It kills them.

English is used imprecisely in normal conversation. Apart from using different letters to form the same sound, like ough ... rough, bough, though, cough .... we confuse ourselves and visitors with incorrect punctuation (putting apostrophes in all the incorrect places) to the famous yeah nah / yes no, to begin an answer. This latter expression has to be explained to U.S. armed forces working with their Australian counterparts.

Let us go for a beer..... time passes .. you said a beer and we have drunk at least four. I did not say ONE beer, I said a beer.

Most of us either ignore or can decipher bad grammar. What happens, I ask, when the realisation dawns on me that store ‘assistant’ cannot fluently read or describe product information; or give change by subtraction? Now, I’m a local, so what hope for tourists?

But wait.... those among us who have young relatives. Have you ever been in a position to see a SMS (text) of theirs? Is there a new ‘word’ for what this language is, and will it become universal?

As my Good Friend and mentor said ‘Don’t worry Ross, you and I will be dead before it matters’.  Profound, Alex.
