President's Message - Carolyn Such

Our Tuesday night speaker was Mark Thomas the founder of the Code 9 organisation.  This is an organisation that supports people with PTSD.  Mark spoke from firsthand experience after many years in the Victorian Police Force.  His work took a toll on his mental health.  After taking a break, he decided to set up an organisation to help people in a similar situation to himself.  Mount Eliza Rotary have supported Code 9 for three years with 50% of the funs raised from our golf day.  It was great to also catch up with Greg Kraus again.  Greg is still a very active policeman locally.  He talked about some of his work colleagues who have suffered from PTSD including to the point of suicide.

Today a group of members of the Club were down at the Moorooduc Railway Station.  Together with Mr & Mrs Santa Claus we welcomed a group of children, their parents and grandparents who travelled from Mornington on the train.  It’s a joint venture with Mornington Rotary.   A gift from Santa, a sausage sizzle, ice cream and bags of sweets make for a great day.   This event is a wonderful, fun activity.  It’s great to see children from less fortunate environments having such a happy time.  Thanks to Linda Morris and Sue Voss for great effort purchasing  gifts and Janet Richards who assisted with the enormous amount of wrapping required.

On Friday morning we will be involved in the final assembly at Mount Eliza Primary.  At the assembly, the newly formed EarlyAct Club will be making a presentation to the Frankston Rotaract Club.  The children have spent many hours encouraging the whole school community to collect toothpaste and toothbrushes to be located in the three community support centres in Mornington, Rosebud and Hastings.  This is so that homeless and disadvantaged people have access to good oral hygiene.

I am looking forward to our Xmas function next Tuesday.  I am hoping for a fun night to wrap up our very busy and successful half year.

I would like to take this opportunity of wishing all members and their families a very happy and safe Xmas.

December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month

Of course our greatest claim to fame in this area is our ongoing and committed approach to eradicating

polio from the whole world!! This viral illness affected many children some 70 years ago with a whole ward

of artificial lungs at Fairfield Infectious Diseases hospital for those who lost the muscle power to even

breathe on their own. Now young parents may almost be excused for becoming complacent in seeking

vaccination for their children, given they have had little, if any experience with the disease, especially as

evidenced by the closure of the ward and even the hospital itself, thanks to the significant pharmaceutical

inroads we have made into treating infectious diseases in general and polio in particular.
