Hi all, it has been a sad week once again with the passing of Tim Acton. Tim was a very active member of our club since he joined in 2014, especially in the areas of Fellowship and Welfare. His wit and genial manner brought a wonderfully happy and positive environment to all our meetings and functions.  Tim was a tireless volunteer at all working bees and fund raisers and supported members in their times of need. He maintained a close contact with the club after he took a step backwards to become a Friend of the Club and although ill health hampered his contributions, he attended meetings and functions when he could.  
 
Once again COVID restrictions will prevent our attendance at his funeral.  My thanks to Bernie and and other members who have been involved in his care over the last few weeks. There will be a working bee at some point in the future to tidy up his house and gardens.  Michael Coultas’s funeral was held on Tuesday and I am sure a number of you attended via the web and it was good to hear the family speak of Michaels life. No doubt Judy will keep us informed of when his memorial service will be.
 
On the Club front, a warm welcome to Garry Padey on his induction and I look forward to his participation in the Club’s activities.  It was also great to hear from President Luke of the Satellite Club.  His positive assessment of their future and growth of their club was most encouraging.  For any of you who would like to attend one of their meetings, they meet on the first Wednesday and this Sunday of each month.

To keep you all abreast of the program for the year.  Please remember it will change mainly due to COVID restrictions and inevitable clashes over the year so please check it regularly.
 
Congratulations to Linda and the Community Committee for their ongoing work and their supply of food hampers, puzzles and clothing to local needy people/families.  I suspect this will be only the first delivery of many as COVID bites over the next couple of months.

  • Maurie advised that he had spoken to Judy Coultas, and there will be a private service for Michael on 24 August. It is planned to have a Memorial Service at a later date
  • John Horscroft is to have knee surgery at the Bays Hospital. Good wishes to John for a speedy recovery
  • Friend of the Club, Celeste Greer, has had a fall which resulted in a broken shoulder. Best wishes to Celeste and Peter

  • The next two club meetings will be by zoom , 24th and 31st Aug. The lock down will change the format on these two nights.
  • Brynton wont be able to hold his award night until probably next year. Hopefully we will be back at Toorak on the 7th September.  The committees and club service jobs for 21-22 are finalised. There will be a rotation of sergeants rather than a single sergeant.
  • Neil has set up a Calendar of dates of meetings and events to facilitate communication and no over bookings for his year.  The calendar can be added to if a director/member has a specific need. The list will be confirmed and changed by Neil or myself if required and circulated as needed.
Fund Raising

  • Carolyn said that the group has been discussing a raffle, with prizes already in hand. The raffle is likely to be an on-line raffle. It was considered that the present time was not appropriate and a time in the New Year may be better
  • Next Sunday’s Farmers Market has been cancelled. Stall holders are not happy with crowds moving freely at the Market, and most have farmgate stalls.
  • Bernie Edwards is liaising with Bunnings for the Sausage Sizzles when they return.
  • The Trust Fund is now in place and can support the essential activities of the Club.
Youth

  • MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly). We have two teams, one representing Brazil and the other, Morocco. Assembly will take place via Zoom. The Brazil team have agreed to come to Rotary meeting on a suitable date. The submissions will be made via a 3 minute video. There will be a $300 prize for the winning team, $200 for the runner up and a $100 encouragement prize sponsored by the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza
  • NYSF (National Youth Science Forum). We have students from Toorak College and Frankston High School. They will be focussing on the History of Mt Eliza. The program will take place in January. Our Club is supporting the attendees financially. James Voss and John Paterson will be involved in the interview process.
  • Young Carers will take place later in the year.
Community Service

  • Linda is collecting items for the Village Neighbourhood House. Scarves, beanies, warm jackets, books, crossword puzzles (without any missing pieces), are requested.  Also requested are sterile jam jars and anyone that can help with cooking at a later date.  Linda is also looking for people who could make welfare phone calls to the 200 people they have that require help.

  • On Thursday 14 October it is planned to have a Thursday evening event from 6.30 pm onwards - this will either be a dinner at a local restaurant or the Trivia Night originally planned for September - details will be confirmed once lockdown ends, however please save the date
  • On Monday 1 November we will be having our annual Melbourne Cup Calcutta as started by Tim Acton several years ago.  This event will again be at Le Hoang Vietnamese Restaurant from 6.00 pm onwards. The restaurant has been booked out for the evening. All members and friends are most welcome.
 
Environment

  • Justin urged us all to get our food waste disposal containers (Kitchen Caddy) from the Council.  Compostable liner bags are also available from Council.  If you are a rate payer on the Mornington Peninsular and you have a Green lid (garden waste) bin you are eligible for the free kitchen caddy.  Justin wants our Club to lead the way in this important environmental initiative.  Food waste should not go into land fill as this creates methane.  Food waste needs to be composted.  We are now fortunate the council are allowing residents to add food waste into the garden waste (green lid) bins.  Lets all start diverting food waste away from the rubbish bin. This small step will have a huge impact to the environment.  Encourage your family and friends to do the same.

They give out care packages with the above items added as a nice gesture to people who are living alone and to domestic violence cases in the community.

Warm jackets all in good condition.

They are given out to people who are sleeping rough and the needy. All of the unloved items can be dropped off at my front door or I can collect.

When Covid restrictions allow the Neighbourhood  house will have cooking bees to cook meals for the needy ( 4 people required ). There will also be jam making for their Fete in November. If anyone has small sterilised jars without labels they would be greatly appreciated. The Community House also have 200 people that they make welfare calls to make sure they are ok. I need volunteers to help with the calls.

If anyone has any excess fruit or veggies they are growing could you please let me know so we can use for jam or add to meals.
