What is Interplast?
Interplast Australia was established in 1983 following the original model originally formed in USA in 1969. Dubbed a joint project between Rotary District 9800 and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Purpose was established to provide voluntary medical teams to carry out plastic and reconstructive surgery in developing countries.
Over the years, the involvement of Rotary Clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand has funded teams throughout the South Pacific. Rotary is highly involved and has Board representation.
During Covid lockdown, Interplast Australia has concentrated on teaching local medical professionals through on-line courses and acting as on-line support for actual operations. This work will continue but with easier travel conditions there is a need to re-establish overseas medical teams during 2023.
Proposal
Peninsula Cluster Presidents have accepted the proposal that together we raise sufficient money to support an oversea Interplast trip in early 2023. Total cost of a trip is $60K. Rotary can be allocated one place to travel with the team.
We are hoping that we can get as close to full funding as possible. A target of $5K/Club would be a good starting point. Larger Clubs may be able to do more.
Getting Started
Interplast are keen to raise their profile with Rotary Clubs. They would be happy to travel and present to Club meetings.
Mt Eliza Rotary Club are happy to co-ordinate and lead. A celebratory dinner has been scheduled for November 8th in Mt Eliza. The purpose of the dinner is not to raise money, its to raise and strengthen the Interplast profile within our Cluster. In attendance at the dinner would be a number of the plastic surgeons who give their time and expertise on these trips.
Details for the dinner will follow.
