President's Message - John Welsh

Hi Fellow Rotarians,

President’s report 2nd November, 2022

Many thanks to Jim and Phil for organising Mondays Calcutta evening, I couldn’t believe how well Phil was able to extract the donations for the Horses!
It was a fun night and great to be able to welcome 80 members and friends. I hope you enjoyed yourselves and we look forward to Cup Eve being a regular occurrence.

What a great finish to the night to have Jim Young awarded a Sapphire to go with his Paul Harris award PDG Mark was fulsome of his praise for Jim and it was a fitting tribute to a hardworking Rotarian.

Wednesday this week Neil arranged a tree planting and restoration work at the Moorooduc railway area, the local conservation group was also supported by the Peninsula Grammar students. See photos. We still have more work to do which Neil will arrange in due course.

I visited John Paterson in hospital this week where he was recovering from a fall which cracked some ribs, he also was undergoing some other treatments. He was out last weekend happy to be home.

Ross also has had some time in hospital, I have been in touch and sent our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

We have the district Interplast dinner next Tuesday, we are trying to set up a zoom for the club of the speech by the CEO of Interplast and as I understand it one of the surgeons from the organisation.
We have the Board meeting next week. If you have any agenda items, please let me or George-Ann
know by Monday.
Thanks for all your support.

Regards
John
Many thanks to all involved in Tree Planting, including Peninsula boys, Neil and Di Horscroft.

Stories
The Calcutta
Melbourne Cup Calcutta

Thank you to 79 Rotarians and guests who attended our Melbourne Cup Calcutta evening at Le Hoang Vietnamese Restaurant on Monday 31 October.

Though somewhat complex, the Calcutta saw four winners who owned the first three and last place horses in Tuesday’s Cup. In addition, twelve attendees received other payments. The advantages of a Calcutta are that it enables people to have greater say in their choice of horse and there are more recipients of monies.  After the late scratching of Lunar Flare, the total prize pool, shared by the four winners, was reduced to $2652.50. In addition, a further $1272.50 was paid out in settlements to other attendees.

Congratulations to Robyn Cracknell on her first prize for Gold Trip, Tia Worrall for second place with Emissary, Joy MacEwan for third place with High Emocean and Harriet Fennell for last place (over the line) with Camorra. Sincere thanks to:

President John Welsh for his opening and closing remarks and, with Phil Key, for drawing horses and owners
Phil Key for a fantastic job as auctioneer
Bernie Edwards for a substantial effort in collecting and reconciling monies both on the night and in the days following
Linda Morris who, as always, was great at organisation, selling cakes and collecting eftpos payments among her many roles
Carolyn Heale, friend of Robyn Helms & me, for double checking horse drawers, auction results and associated financials
Carolyn Such for significant organisation, encouragement and her generosity in donating the major non horse related auction prize
Rhonda Vincent for checking non racing auction results.
Sue Voss, our Treasurer, who is still talking to me after she had to make some 16 bank transfers on Wednesday
Dan from Le Hoang and his team for opening especially for Rotary and providing a good quality meal at an excellent price.

Thanks to all of those Rotarians who organised to bring friends to the event. This made the evening a great one; both from a fellowship and a financial point of view.  While the final results are still be calculated the Club achieved well over $3000 from this event.  Specifically, the actual Calcutta provided just on $398, there was over $600 from attendance and well over $2000 from the auction of non-horse related auctions (thanks to everyone who donated prizes). In addition, cakes to the value of over $800 were sold and we received donations totalling $145 (thank you to the two donors).

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Calcutta events are really designed for where cash can be exchanged on the night. The use of cards and the need for pay outs on the day(s) after the event made the organisation more difficult.  As a consequence, I believe that next year we will simply auction the horses (Phil is already gearing up for next time!)

In spite of any difficulties this was an outstanding opportunity for fellowship and once again, thank you to everyone.

Jim Young

Brynton's Joke of the Week
In the absence of Brynton's joke this week - this in a lovely little story I read from Jeffrey Archer
Dear Max Sturt, an aged pensioner in a small country town in England was thrilled to receive a telegram from Queen Elizabeth on his 100th birthday.
He and his wife, Ellen and family were treated to a Civic reception and a lift home in the Mayor's Rolls Royce.
He was very worried that he wouldn't be around for his wife's up and coming 100th in 3 years' time.  But when the time came, he was still extremely well but was concerned that Ellen was adamant that she didn't want any fuss or bother and just a quiet family dinner at home.

When 2 weeks went by after his wife's birthday with no telegram, he took the chance to phone Buckingham Palace when Ellen was out shopping with their daughter.
He was surprised to be put through to an extremely posh gentleman, ex Colonel Harrison immediately, after explaining his situation.

"Oh dear Mr Sturt would you mind holding and we'll sort this out straight away. There must have been some kind of administrative problem"
Max held on for what felt like a very long time.  Ex Colonel Harrison finally came back to Max; "I'm so sorry for the lengthy wait Mt Sturt but we appear to have found the problem".
"Oh wonderful" said Max "can we expect the telegram soon?".
"No, all's good Mr Sturt, that telegram was sent 5 years ago".
