Normally a District Governor visit is a time for the DG to get a good feel for a Club and vice-versa. Pre COIVID there was a Board & DG meeting followed by the club meeting that evening. There is time to get to know each other and share ideas. At the Board Meeting the DG can learn about and then impart advice on our goals and projects. We all get to discuss our plans and progress and also learn what the District expects from us. At the evening meeting, the DG would then tell the members about his feel for our Club and give us insights into the district workings and plans, and RI’s focus for the year. The DG’s partner would introduce their project. It is unique in that it gives all the clubs in the District 9820 a task they can all work towards to make a greater impact. Come to COVID times, things are different. We are now restricted to Zoom meetings and emails. This this year, we filled in a questionnaire for DG Bill about our Club to replace the Board meeting and then hosted Bill and his wife Judy at a Zoom meeting. This limits much of the impact of a DG meeting, however, it is far better than nothing. So what I can conclude is that given the restrictions we faced we still had a cracking good “visit” from DG Bill and his wife Judy. In some ways we got a clearer vision of what District is asking of us with regards to branding, to think carefully where our hard earned funds are to go and how we need to demand more respect for the Rotary brand from the causes we donate to. Judy’s project also focuses on the Club’s progress to this end as well as using this process to gain members. I think DG Bill also enjoyed the rigorous question time and I suspect we could have gone on for a lot longer.

Some good news from the Foundation in that our District Grant for the improvements at the off leash dog park in Cobb Rd has been approved and the Student Scholarship grant is also likely to be approved. We are also seeking applicants for the revamped RYLA(Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) program to be held in January. We are looking for 18 – 30yo people with leadership ambitions in their vocations/community interest who can spend 5 days on this program.

It appears our community in Victoria is in for a rocky road ahead as we adjust to living with COVID and the restrictions it puts on us. At least the many of the sports lovers can get back to outdoor sports – even the golfers! Let’s hope the vaccination level gets to 90% as quickly as possible and stay safe everyone.

District Governor, Bill Degnan

DG Bill introduced his District Team and explained the role that each member of the team plays. He then quoted an aim for Rotary, ‘Together we see a World people unite and take action to make a continuing change to better our Community’

He then spoke about Rotary membership, which has been static on a Worldwide basis for the past few years.

Each one, bring one
Grow more to do more, do more to grow more
Service is the rent we pay to be on this Earth
Expand our reach
Improve project quality
Enhance our engagement
Increase our ability to adapt. Maybe coffee morning once a month or other simpler ways of getting together.

Bill’s wife, Judy, then spoke about her project for this Rotary year, which was the Publicise the work that Rotary was doing in our District. This includes having Rotary banners at all Rotary projects, getting articles in local papers, making sure if Rotary contributed to a project, that Rotary received appropriate publicity. She then wants us to send copies of the publicity to her, so that she can arrange for a publicity book.

Bill advised that next year’s Conference at Traralgon will be held on 25 – 27 Feb. The theatre is looking good. The Keynote speaker will be Fiona Wood, Plastic Surgeon, who did outstanding work in the aftermath of the Bali bombing. On the Friday, there will be Golf, a Wine Tour or a self-drive tour around the Latrobe Valley

Bill explained that District will be looking for Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) registrants in January.

AG Peter Rawlings

AG Peter Rawlings then spoke about the Peninsula Bay Trail. This Cluster Group Project is being done in conjunction with the Shire of Mornington Council, who are strongly behind the project. Council have set up a major project team. The trail will be over 100 km. The focus on the project will be the flora, fauna and heritage.

There is a lot happening with the Rotary Peninsula Cluster and our Council to progress the Peninsula (Bay) Trail as the combined Rotary Australia Centenary Project. Council has prioritised its development, and committed $.5m in this year’s Budget to the Peninsula Trail, including the appointment of a person to lead in its development. Most of the eight Peninsula clubs have identified their initial local projects, mainly rest stops with associated vegetation and landscaping. Mt.Martha Rotary Club has been successful in winning $9000 of Federal Government Funding towards their project. The Cluster has applied for a Rotary Centenary Grant on behalf of all eight clubs. With the Rotary branding being adopted as part of the Peninsula Trail branding, and as we all start to appreciate the scale of the Peninsula Trail and the potential benefit to our local community, there is plenty of reason to think there will be plenty of benefit for the next 100 years!
