Thoughts of your President.

How many ‘amalgamated’ Rotary clubs are we aware of? For how many Years have they been hyphenated?

I was very pleasantly surprised to meet a Rotarian at Rosebud - Rye whom I first met at primary school in 1953! We were born within  less than a month of each other I learned.

I last saw him in 1992 at our State School grade 6 reunion. Our teachers came too; Mr Lewis and Mr Tompkins....we still called them Mr. Really.

By the way, if the cops were after Ian they’d have no problem; he’s aged well. A lovely wife too; a family man.

Our entire grades journeyed through Oakleigh State and Oakleigh High School. An Anglo - Saxon, Protestant tide of  belief that our World would always be thus.

Things were more ordered then; many went to  apprenticeship, wore suits to ‘go out’. Also the Armed Forces conscripted many of us. Life went on.

In conversation with Ian we discussed the fact that his home Club of Oakleigh is now Oakleigh - Huntingdale - Clayton. He told me that Clayton got as low as eight members.

Ian is philosophical about what is happening, but not complacent. We wondered aloud how clubs like Frankston now have more than two iterations. When I was a member they already had two. Not counting Frankston North.

I said at our meeting that we cannot seriously believe that we have learned all we need to learn about attracting members. Membership is one of two principal tasks assigned to both The Special Projects and Club Services Committees.

Membership is likewise the responsibility of us all.

On another matter; that of initiativeThe speaker this week was Sally Dell [see Mark's Report]. Sally was accompanied by her husband Peter. I understand that Peter will return to address us in December; you see Sally used up Peter's time as well as her own.......

Now, part of Sally's presentation included reference to individual face washers and also manual washing machines. She said that the children could not be relied upon to keep their face washers clean; thus perpetuating the cycle of trachoma.

Our Chairman, Hardy Juraschek had an epiphany. [Germans like us are always prescient]. He said we should fund a washing machine / machines and a quantity of face washers. In this manner, the cleaning can be supervised at school; then each face washer can be immediately placed in a single - use bag. Profound.

Please read DGE Humphries' report.

End Trachoma
Ending Trachoma in Australia is not an option. Trachoma is a preventable disease with good hygiene practices. Rates of trachoma are falling, but we still need to do more.

There are many projects that we are doing that are making a difference, Face Washers, Washing Machines, Water Trailer Project, Mirror are just a few.
Sally Dell, our District champion presented us with some sobering information about the effects of Trachoma on our indigenous community.

Sally also talked about the impact that Rotary is having in helping while working along side various organisations like, the Aboriginal Community, Federal & State governments, Fred Hollows Foundation and other government and non-government bodies.

Why are we involved? We are People of Action; we change people’s lives. How good is that?

Stories
Sally Dell on Trachoma

Trachoma is the world’s leading infectious cause of irreversible blindness.  The disease disappeared from Australian cities and towns over 100 years ago.  But we remain the last developed country in the world where this disease is still considered endemic.

It persists in some of our outback Indigenous communities.  It does so in communities where living standards are inadequate, where there is a lack of functional, maintained washing facilities, and where homes are chronically overcrowded.  Current personal and community hygiene practices allow the frequent spreading of infected secretions from one child to another, and although trachoma is easily treated with antibiotics, it is the frequent recurrent infections that damage the eyelids and cause blindness.

In 2008, Australia joined the World Health Organisation in their global goal to eliminate trachoma by 2020 and committed to extensive funding of programs aimed at trachoma’s elimination.  Since then, a coordinated effort to treat trachoma with antibiotics and promote hygiene saw levels of trachoma reduce from 21%, to 4.6% in 2015.  However, to stop trachoma transmission and to stop trachoma bouncing back, we must work on prevention.  We must make sure all children in these communities can keep their faces clean, and that they have safe, functional washing facilities.

Led by the Rotary Club of Melbourne, EndTrachoma by 2020 unites Rotary clubs across Australia, to work towards eliminating trachoma by preventing the spread of infection that causes this avoidable blindness.  This project is endorsed by 2017-18 Rotary International President, Australian Ian Riseley, and Zone Director Noel Trevaskis, and has been endorsed as a project to commemorate Rotary Australia’s centenary year in 2021.

Fellow Rotarians

I will send the order  board around next week at the meeting for those of you who want to order Hoodies ($55-00)  or a Polo - Polar Fleece ($35-00)   (i.e. one of the jumpers).

At the same time if any of you want to order a shirt .. this can also be done  .. please let me know, and we will place the order on the second page SEPARATE from the jumper order.

If you are uncertain of size you can go to Hip Pocket Mornington & try them on. Their staff are very helpful.

I will then place the order with Hip Pocket  so that these can be delivered as soon as they can get the embroidery done.

Payment on pickup please .. cash is preferred, but I will let everyone know that they are  available & before I bring them to Rotary for collection ...

Although it is preferred if these are done in bulk .. we can do small orders at anytime .. so we can order them in the future.

Pictures of the Jumpers are on the Club website  ..

I will also try to remember to bring the samples again next week.

sincerely,

Rowan

Note from the Prez. There’s nothing to stop you paying upon order. Rowan is not a bank. 😃
