Emily’s journey began with significant challenges. As an infant, she underwent major heart surgery after doctors discovered a narrowing of her aorta. Complications during surgery led to septicaemia and oxygen deprivation, leaving her with a physical disability and an uncertain prognosis. Her parents were told she may never walk.
But from the very beginning, Emily’s story refused to follow limits set by others.
Through years of surgeries, rehabilitation, and sheer determination, she not only learned to walk, but grew up determined to participate fully in life alongside her siblings. She attended mainstream school at a time when integration for students with physical disabilities was rare, becoming one of the first in her area to do so.
What stands out most in Emily’s early story is not just perseverance, but mindset. She never saw herself as defined by limitation—only by possibility.
Finding Strength Through Sport
Sport became a turning point. In the water, Emily found freedom—an environment where she felt equal. What began as a passion quickly evolved into competitive success.
At her first national competition, she entered multiple events with little expectation. By the end of the meet, she had won them all.
This moment marked the beginning of an international swimming career that saw Emily represent Australia and travel the world—competing across the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, and beyond.
But more than medals, swimming gave her confidence, independence, and a belief in what was possible.
A Global Commitment To Service
Emily’s desire to make a difference led her into teaching—a profession that would take her far beyond the classroom.
Through Australian Volunteers International, she accepted a placement in Namibia, teaching in a remote village near the Angolan border. Immersed in a completely different culture, Emily embraced both the challenges and the opportunities, forming deep connections with her students and community.
Her work continued in Zimbabwe during a particularly volatile period, where she supported HIV education programs and counselling initiatives. This role placed her on the front line of complex social and health challenges, requiring not only professional skill, but emotional resilience and courage.
Emily later brought her experience back to Australia, working in remote Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory. There, she faced some of the most demanding conditions of her career—navigating isolation, cultural complexity, and the realities of educational disadvantage.
Yet even in the most challenging environments, her focus remained the same: connection, inclusion, and opportunity.
Leadership, Advocacy And Impact
Emily’s career has spanned classrooms, communities, and countries. From mentoring emerging leaders in remote schools to working in international development and disability inclusion, she has consistently championed the importance of access, equity, and understanding.
Her work with global organisations has taken her to multiple countries, supporting programs that aim to embed inclusive practices across education, health, and community development.
However, it is her return to teaching that perhaps best captures her impact.
Today, Emily works in the classroom, where her presence alone challenges perceptions. For her students, disability is not something unusual—it is simply part of who their teacher is.
In turn, she is helping shape a generation that is more empathetic, inclusive, and resilient.
A Life Redefined—Again
In 2022, Emily faced another major turning point when a fall resulted in a severe leg fracture. For the first time in her life, she was forced to relearn how to navigate daily life without the mobility she had fought so hard to achieve.
It was a confronting experience—one that required her to adapt once again.
But true to form, Emily approached this chapter with the same determination that has defined her life. Embracing new technology and support systems, she has regained her independence and continues to live fully and actively.
Why It Matters
Emily Costello’s story resonated deeply with Rotary members—not simply because of what she has achieved, but because of how she has chosen to live.
Her journey reflects the very essence of Rotary’s values: resilience in the face of adversity, service above self, and a commitment to creating meaningful change in the world.
More than anything, Emily reminded us that inclusion is not just an idea—it is something we actively build through our actions, attitudes, and willingness to see potential in others.
Her message was both simple and powerful:
It is not about what you cannot do. It is about what you choose to do anyway.
